Popular Post Airehead ★ Posted January 18 Popular Post Share #1 Posted January 18 The government is getting rid of red tape. For real. The archives are full of literal red tape— narrow ribbon made from cotton or linen, dyed red. This was used by government clerks for all sorts of purposes, from tying bundles of related papers together, to sealing official documents, to tying shut envelopes. The National Archives is selling off some of what they have, which sounds like too much, through their gift shop. 2 2 1

Yes because they have miles of it just sitting around decaying. I read somewhere there is still like 150 miles of it left that was ordered in 1812 for war documents.

Speaking of the War of 1812, last night in DC we were busting the chops of the English guys. “See that round silo style top just to the right of the Capitol building “? “That’s the Library of Congress. The British burned that in the War of 1812.” Oh, there’s the White House. Yep, they burned that too.

If the government does indeed have 150 miles of red tape or ribbon left over from the war of 1812, and I don't doubt it's true, you have to wonder what else may be stored and forgotten in the many government warehouses... 3 1

If it's actually tape, I don't think 200 year-old glue will do the job anymore.

12string Posted January 19 Share #17 Posted January 19 There's a bunch of red tape gifts. https://www.nationalarchivesstore.org/collections/red-tape Just a quick calculation: The acrylic, paper, box, time - maybe $6. Paperweight is $43. $37 profit. That piece in the gift shown is about 1" long. If there's 150 mile of tape laying around, that's $351,648,000. Hurry up and place those orders, maybe we can head off the debt ceiling crisis to about next Wednesday
