Morning Or Evening?

...shower?

For decades, I was a morning shower person. Shower before school. Shower before work. Shower before heading out on the weekends.

Now, with WFH, I am showering at night.  It's a WILD change. I hate the way my hair looks in the AM, so that's a downside, but otherwise, I find an evening shower pretty nice.

Of course, in the summer, I could be showering 2 or even three times depending on activities, but on a work day, I gotta say the change from morning to night has been weird.

Are you a morning or evening shower person? Has it changed over the years?

I can relate to both of those!  Working at home, I can just toss my baseball cap on when I go out. But when working an office, I needed "normal" hair.

You are the worst sort of person if you don't shower in the morning, especially Kirby (nemesis-building).

I hate that I let it slide until later because I am working from home, I feel a vital step has been missed.

Late night....right before bed. After construction work all day (at the computer!) I gotta wash all the sweat off. Don't want allthat gunk in the bed

now retired I still do nights...but have been mixing in morning showers. It is strange to be clean & refreshed in the morning

Two or three showers a day? That can't be good for your skin.

Late night. I had a dirty job working on machines and then come home to working in the garage.

Now that I'm retired I still like talking showers before going to bed.

Generally evening, but morning if I have a doctor, dental, or eye appointment, usually scheduled between 11 am and 1 pm.

Mornings on workdays. My bed head can be legendary! On weekends, it’s usually after my ride and/or any messy chores. If I do a workout on a weekday, I will do a quick rinse in the shower so I don’t feel sticky at bedtime.

I don't shower every day. Certainly not 2-3 times a day.

My dermatologist told me to limit showers like this:

https://www.webmd.com/beauty/shower-how-often#:~:text=Dirt and dead skin can, existing skin conditions like eczema.

Regular bathing is obviously a healthy habit. So an extra shower a day may seem like more of a good thing. After all, showers clean your body. And cleaner is better, right?

Well, not necessarily. It might be too much of a good thing. You want to shower enough to keep yourself clean (and not too smelly), but not so much that you dry out your skin and strip off its natural protective layer.

So how often should you bathe? Though your family and friends may beg to differ, it might not be as often as you think.

Oddly, I've made it to 52 without my skin falling off!

Strange, eh?

Everyone is different. At least that's what the article says. I had eczema from too much washing. So I've made it 56 years showering less. Less water usage, less soap and shampoo, saving time.

Maybe all of that showering is why your hair is falling out.

Never had eczema. :dontknow: And my water, soap, and shampoo consumption is probably pretty minimal, and not a real worry.  I'm definitely blaming my gradual descent into baldness on genetics, but perhaps, it's the water pressure and scrubbing action!

My hair had a party last night, it must've got into a terrible fight
'Cause when my head hit the pillow it was lookin' all right
My hair had a party last night
My hair had a party last night
When I lay down everything was all right
It started out friendly but there must have been a fight
My hair had a party last night
Early in the morning, I get out of my bed
The birdies are singing outside
There's waffles on the table and a cold glass of milk
I got a warm, happy feeling inside
I can't wait to go to school and I love myself
I'm the captain of the football team
The alarm goes off and I hear mom yelling
And I realize it must have been a dream
Oh my hair had a party last night
It must've got into a terrible fight
'Cause when my head hit the pillow it was lookin' alright
My hair had a party last night
My hair had a party last night
When I lay down everything was all right
It started out friendly but there must have been a fight
My hair had a party last night
Okay everyone make your hair have a party
Shake it up. Put your fingers in it. Mess it all up
Now make your neighbor's hair have a party

I pick up a brush, I pick up a comb
I look at the scissors but I leave them alone
There's a lizard that lives in the rocks by the sea
This morning that lizard looks a lot like me
I try to wet it down but it only makes it worse
The cowlick in the back is a family curse
I pick up a cap and I put it on my head
Wish I was dreaming back in my warm bed
Oh my hair had a party last night
It must've got into a terrible fight
'Cause when my head hit the pillow it was lookin' alright
My hair had a party last night
My hair had a party last night
When I lay down everything was all right
It started out friendly but there must have been a fight
My hair had a party last night
Last night. Last night
Last night. Last night

This might be a consideration when much older in life.  The skin and hair in general is much drier in texture, than when one is in their 20-30's.  My hair is definitely drier than it used to be several decades ago.

Honest, none of us live in India or Malayasia where it's far more humid there, and maybe only certain days showering twice.

I shower in evenings. It also relaxes me for promoting better sleep.   After all, during cycling months, it makes more sense to me.

I used to shower very early in the morning....before  I was cycle-commuting to work @32 yrs. Not any more. I don't have far to cycle where I am now.  I may shower in morning on weekends.

See, this is where the evening shower thing just falls apart.  You shower, you go to bed, you wake and look like there are a couple of weasels fighting on your head.  You'll go all day with your hair looking like you don't know how to groom yourself properly.  Sure you can kinda try to push it in place, but it never quite works out the way you want it when you start behind the 8 ball like that.  Shower first folks know their hair will look like it is supposed to all day, and the evening washesr know theirs will never be right.

I’m sure the lower humidity of a mountain winter plays a huge role compared to his Mid-Atlantic experience.

I would agree.  Our air here is much drier year round vs. more humid weather where Razor lives. (which is similar to Toronto)

Not for people who have naturally straight hair. We can choose to shower at any time. But better to wash hair at least several times/wk. or daily. Otherwise it's noticeable on straight hair.

I had more natural oil in my hair as a teen, etc. Most likely in aging this probably has slowly helped keep the health of my hair, so hair doesn't look dried out.  I have never used conditioners on my hair for the past 6 decades.  Just wrong for my hair. It leaves a heavy residue on my straight hair. I'm just mentioning this..because of biological genetic differences.

I noticed for my siblings...it's the same:  I don't see hair conditioners in their bathrooms.

My standard summer process is the shower before a ride.  For a ride, I apply liberal amounts of sunscreen. On the ride, I sweat quite a bit (shocking, but I am exercising so it almost makes sense). Get home from a ride, and shower to clean off the sunscreen, sweat, and anything that may have stuck to the sweaty sunscreen.  When the days are longer, I may even hit the pool in the evening - no sunscreen, but certainly lots of chlorine. A quick jump in the shower to remove the chlorine, and BOOM - 3 showers in one day!

Also shocking, isn't it? Folks can actually cram three showers into a single span of a day!

I don't think this is an uncommon thing for exercisers in general, or for folks that live in swampland like many of us here do.   I don't think it horrific at all to take multiple showers a day, I will take two in summer most days unless I am in AC much of the time.

I am more than a bit grossed out by people that don't shower every day.  We live in a society, and if you have to mix in with it, you really shouldn't asshole the whole place up by stinking like a homeless dude.  Homeless dudes would mostly love to shower, I am sure.

I take it you haven’t been to the Southern states in the summer.  Many of us here are in VA, GA, FL and I believe SC.  Hot sticky places in the summer.  When I was stationed in VA it was not uncommon for me to shower 2X a day in summer.

I prefer to shower at night but will sometimes shower in the morning.

Dearie complained how terrible the humidity was in Florida when he was there for a wk. Toronto can get very humid in summer (with smog alert),  which I don't miss. On summer bike touring rides for 5 hrs. or more..as an exception, I did shower twice a day.  Early morning and then evening.

Why would you shower before a ride? Do you put on make-up too? Trying to impress someone?

I have done that a few times when I felt super gross.  When you do that, it is because you need to rather than wanting to.

I think @dinneR misses the point sometimes? Literally the first part of this whole thread is, "For decades, I was a morning shower person. Shower before school. Shower before work. Shower before heading out on the weekends."

If one chooses to ignore parts of a post, it's easy to make all sorts of ignorant and/or false assumptions.  :dontknow:

It ain't hard to put together a simple narrative for any "morning shower" person - literally the question of the OP - where they get up, shower, do stuff - even a bike ride or a gym workout or a swim in the ocean or a day at the pool - and end up taking a second (or, oh my god, a third) shower in a day.  But it is also easy to understand that some folks prefer a little "funk" in their lives. I've sat next to enough folks on planes and trains to realize there are a LOT of funky folks out in the world.

Now that I'm retired. 2 or 3 showers a week is all that I need.   Now I shower before we go out somewhere as needed.

When I worked,  I took showers each morning.

When I go withoot for 2 days or more my hair starts itching. Well actually ahspose it is probably my head, not my hair. :D  Reminds me of a class clown in high school who used to say “my hair hurts!”
