Dirtyhip Posted December 29, 2014 Share #1 Posted December 29, 2014 Not sure what the big deal is about these little balls. The taste is rather boring, IMHO. I used freshly grated nutmeg too. Still boring with the fresh spices. Gravy does nothing for me. This will probably be one of the last times I make anything with gravy. Meh

Dirtyhip Posted December 29, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted December 29, 2014 I love swedish meatballs.. I will be making some for our friends house on new years eve. I wish you could have tried mine. They were tender and very juicy. The sauce came together the way the recipe intended, It's just that the flavor was not as complex as I usually shoot for. They just tasted like meatballs and gravy to me. I would have added some dijon to spice it up, but I was completely out of it. Do you only add salt, pepper, nutmeg and cloves? Am I missing something? Basic recipe was beef & pork, with panko and one egg. 1/4 tsp of cloves and 1/4 tsp of nutmeg. sauce had butter flour, beef stock, and sour cream to finish. LoneWolf Posted December 29, 2014 Share #19 Posted December 29, 2014 The last time I had swedish meatballs, they were very bland. Which leads me to believe Ikea was doing it right, because the last time I had homemade ones, I could say pretty much the same thing.
Dirtyhip Posted December 29, 2014 Author Share #20 Posted December 29, 2014 The last time I had swedish meatballs, they were very bland. This is why I find them boring. There is no complexity to them. I make these fantastic lamb meatballs. The spices I put on them make them pop. The recipe calls for cumin, turmeric, salt, pepper, cayenne, cinnamon, fennel, and coriander. The flavors are super intense. I put an herb sauce with it that has cilantro, mint, ginger, cumin, yogurt, serrano chili, onion and lemon juice. There is so much going on with that dish. I enjoy more spicy recipes lately. Scott in MN Posted December 30, 2014 Share #24 Posted December 30, 2014 I'll cast my vote in favor of Swedish meatballs or as my Grandma used to call them, Chet-buller (phonetic spelling). I like spicy food too, but sometimes simplicity hits the spot with me. I've been eating them since I was a kid.
