shootingstar Posted March 10, 2023 Share #1 Posted March 10, 2023 It's wierd enough for me to read about coastal cities losing their tree canopy after living in Vancouver. So the North American city benchmark is 47%. Meanwhile..prairie city (Calgary), is trying work itself up from 8.25% to 16%. That'll take another dog century. Our rainfall in spring to fall, is not that great. To me ,the trees look abit dried out, compared to ie. Toronto where it's not as luxuriant green, but still pretty good. Prairie city is building new suburban developments too fast. Some subdivisions don't have any trees.
sheep_herder ★ Posted March 10, 2023 Share #2 Posted March 10, 2023 You know there is a reason why trees grow where they do. Like here, they grow at a bit higher elevation, in draws, and along waterways and around lakes. Note the common factor in all of those scenarios is more effective water than is found on the open prairies in your Province and in Montana in addition to variation in soil types that occur in those different environments. As water becomes more scarce folks will have to decide the importance of trees in lieu of other needs. Let's hope they make the right decision far enough in advance to be effective. Planting adapted species of trees in a given environment is a first step in the right direction. 2
