Randomguy Posted January 4, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 4, 2015 So I bought a dutch oven, it is supposed to be kind of nice - https://www.lodgemfg.com/dutch-ovens-and-casseroles/6-qt-dutch-ovens.asp It arrived today, and it is BIG, bigger than I imagined. Do I need a 6-quart monster like this for 2 people and a baby, or should I return it and get a smaller one? What say you, people?
Chris... Posted January 4, 2015 Share #2 Posted January 4, 2015 I have one that size. You don't have to fill it, but it's nice to have the option if you entertain guests.
petitepedal ★ Posted January 4, 2015 Share #3 Posted January 4, 2015 If you look at a lot of recipes...they do call for 6 quart quite often....Better to have a littlr too much space than not enough I have this yummy vegetarian chili (with beans) crock pot recipe...I leave out 1 ingredient wheat berries...and just making that recipe fills my crock pot to the very brim In other words I couldn't add the wheat berries if I had them.... So yeah it may look big...but in the end you will find it works well
petitepedal ★ Posted January 4, 2015 Share #4 Posted January 4, 2015 The december issue of Vegetarian Times...reviewed several...and suggested a 5 to 6 quart size...and I think everyone they showed in the magazine..were 5.5 qt
Longjohn ★ Posted January 4, 2015 Share #5 Posted January 4, 2015 You can make your own Dutch Oven. Just pull the covers up over your wife's head when you fart in bed.
UglyBob Posted January 4, 2015 Share #6 Posted January 4, 2015 My biggest is 8 quarts. My brother has a couple of 20 quart ones. He uses them when he caters parties with his BBQ trailer.

It was close to a year before I got any...if you know what I mean.

Randomguy Posted January 5, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted January 5, 2015 Ahh... cast iron. You're finally seeing the light. That's the dutch oven I have, I use it all the time. But it is enameled, so it shouldn't be fussy! So what should be the first thing I make with it?

jsharr ★ Posted January 5, 2015 Share #13 Posted January 5, 2015 That is not a real dutch oven. The real ones are cast iron and you use them to cook over a real fire using hot coals.

Randomguy Posted January 5, 2015 Author Share #20 Posted January 5, 2015 Yes and most of it is bean free also. I was kidding, I like Shiner Bock on a hot day. I seriously don't know if TX has other beers, though, my friend there drinks the usual heinous beers made by A-B and the like if he isn't drinking Shiner. The craft brew scene is HUGE in Texas, just like our hats and boots and mouths and payoffs to NFL refs. http://dallas.eater.com/maps/a-comprehensive-guide-to-touring-dfws-craft-breweries
