Longjohn ★ Posted January 19, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 19, 2015 When I changed the cassette on my road bike to get a lower gear for hills I managed to find one that also gave me more top end. The cassette I put on had an 11-30. I've been riding it on the trainer this winter and noticed I can hit 45mph. Too bad I'm old and my bones break easy. Downhills could really be fun with this cassette. I hit some deer on a downhill going maybe 30 mph. Not something I want to repeat.
Square Wheels Posted January 19, 2015 Share #2 Posted January 19, 2015 I can't get anywhere near 45 on a trainer. I have a 50/34 with an 11/28. The 11 - 14 are like new.
az_cyclist Posted January 26, 2015 Share #3 Posted January 26, 2015 I have a 50/34 crankset with an 11/28 10-speed cassette. I have not found the situation where I could over-pedal the 50/11 combination on a flat or 1% downhill false flat

Longjohn ★ Posted January 29, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted January 29, 2015 Were the deer ok? When I came to lying in the middle of the highway the deer were nowhere to be found. Either they got up and ran away or a local stopped and picked them up to stock his freezer. They probably ran away. I broke my collar bone and my shoulder blade and messed up my face, stinking deers are evil.

az_cyclist Posted January 31, 2015 Share #7 Posted January 31, 2015 my top speed was 47 mph, a downhill decent from Sage Hen Summit in the second half of the Eastern Sierra double. On a flat my top speed has been somewhere around 25-28 mph
Longjohn ★ Posted January 31, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted January 31, 2015 Generally when I am going fast on my bikes I don't take my eyes off the road long enough to check my speed. I guess I need to get a LARGE PRINT bike computer. I have seen 45 on downhills. On the trainer I'm not worried about crashing and can watch my speed. With my other cassette I couldn't spin fast enough to go beyond 40 mph on a bet.

Ralphie ★ Posted January 31, 2015 Share #11 Posted January 31, 2015 You do know that they are easy to change and they keep them in stock at your LBS? For a 1988? Since the drive train is also aboot worn out, it seems like it might make more sense to put any money spent toward a new bike.

Ralphie ★ Posted February 8, 2015 Share #13 Posted February 8, 2015 So tell us about this new bike you're getting... First I am going to get a cheapo mountain bike from my company as a service award, and then maybe a Specialized Allez road bike, unless Ray can sell me on the Felt. Dirtyhip Posted November 19, 2015 Share #22 Posted November 19, 2015 (edited) 50/34 on the old Crux with an 11/28 cassette. My Bianchi was a triple, Like, 52/39/30 (12-25 in the back). Top speed on the Bianchi was 49. Far too fast for sanity. My new MTB will be a 1x11 SRAM XX1. 10/42 cassette. I am gonna rule on that thing!!! haha My pump bike is a single speed. 25/12 My fat bike is a 2x10 with 36/22 crank with a 11/36 cassette.
