Close shave?

Neither. I make sure there are no fingerprints and deny ever being in the area when the infraction occurred.

 

If there are finger prints then claim that's how you found it and you tried to fix it.  

 

Oh, try to avoid this scenario:

 

Curator: Did you knock the beard off King Tut's death mask?

 

You:  Oh no, that would be impossible since I wasn't near that part of the museum.

 

Curator: Um... yeah... we found your finger prints on the beard.

 

You: You mean THAT Death Mask.  Yeah, that's the way I found it when I entered the room and I tried to reattach it.  I started looking for you immediately after I realized that something was amiss.

I think the better move is just to redirect the inquiry by offering up a new suspect.
 Point and yell, "KRAZY DID IT!"
