When I'm writing, I'll try to find the phrases, word orders and unique words a character will use. Once those are in place, the accent will fall into place. Once those are in place, the accent will fall into place. Yeah, I kind of do the same thing. I find certain speech patterns and 'creative' spellings evoke the proper accent for the character.
