Why was the update necessary, btw?

At some point the version we were on would be sunset, likely far off, but still at some point.

This version has many new features that we can use.  YouTube (while still a little buggy() is significantly improved.  For instance, you can now select the part of the video where you want it to start.  The video below will start more than 2 minutes in at the solo.

Images should be a lot easier to embed.

Can I harrumph and be the grumpy old man here?  Being sunset is one thing, but self-sunsetting early is another entirely.

I've talked about upgrading for a while.  I even made a test site so people could see the proposed changes.  I asked many times for people to play with the new system, I received 0 feedback.

Change is hard, I think once you've used this new system for a while you'll agree it's significantly better.

What about dragging quote/edit/Cafe to the right side, is that doable?

I will try.

That is what they kept saying at Rodale, you know.

That is very unfair.  I am anything but Rodale.  I bend over backward to try and keep thi place useable, friendly and as people want it.  They never gave a damn what people wanted.  They never asked and the never respond to requests.

That was unfair in the way received, you would feel different if you were in my head as I typed it.  I should have softened it to convey a bemused emotion, with a winkie thing.  I know you are the anti-Rodale, don't worry about us thinking you are an uncaring bastard about software stuff.   What about the tightening up so we see more posts at once, too?

I'm afraid that this is how things usually work, in that most people through apathy or resistance to change, refuse to participate and then are resentful when it happens.

That said, this doesn't mean that they don't appreciate the amount of work entailed or the selfless motivation of the person doing the work.

Well done and thank you.

George.

You know nothing about the people here.  You come here and judge RG?  What a fucking joke.

Quit sucking up, you are still going to get banned when you post porn!

I do think it is true that most people thought the software update would be mostly a behind-the-scenes type, not wholesale to the user interface, hence the apathy preceding it.  I will say that my biggest issues right now are the spacing of things on the 17" monitor, and also the placement of the items in SW's line item 8.  One post fills the page up, and changing text size, while getting more posts in the field of view, makes the font too tiny to read at all.  Is anyone else experiencing this, or is it just me?

I would also agree with AWWC's sentiment that losing RR (or any one member) because of the update is too many.  We should give it a chance now that labor has been undertaken, and I know SW will make great efforts to get things right (given the constraints of the software), although I know that appealing to everyone is a battle that can't ever be fully won.

So hypothetically, SW, if after a fair attempt is made by all to acclimate to things after you make the changes you can, can you roll back the upgrade if turmoil and insurrection threaten death to all we hold dear?  Again, I am advocating getting the issues ironed out and everyone giving things a fair chance first, but leaving the poison pill within reach if people are pissy once all is done and the acclimating period over.

What do you think?

RG and RR,

I do not think onbike meant disrespect directed at you RG. I took it as a general statement about difficulty with change.

I will be the first to admit my own fear of change can be silly and irrational, but that's just me.  :)

Whose RG and whose judging?

My comments were general in nature and not confined to this forum.

Go back to bed....you're not yet human.

At this point the database itself has been significantly updated, no rollback is possible.  Even if it were, progress needs to march forward.  I didn't like WIndows 7 at first, but I'm not demanding Microsoft continue to support WIndows 3.1.

As I have mentioned (many times) I will do everything possible to make sure being here is a positive experience.  The software has many new features now, it's the theme people are unhappy with.  I'm not crazy about it either, and as the software matures the people who build new themes will start offering them, and I will purchase some.

For those that are truly that unhappy, feel free to leave.  Including you RR.  I thought we were friends and as a friend I expected a little more support.

Onbike, I need you to sound more contrite and come across as wanting forgiveness.

Trust me on this.

Please.

I know....this happens all the time with me.

One shitty remark directed at me and I react without thinking. I have to go carefully when commenting on the universality of human nature which is a pity as I do come away with some real pearls......there should really be a sticky dedicated to them.

I bet Shakespeare had exactly the same problem.

Why are people so resistant to change?  It's inevitable, it's part of life, nothing stays the same and who would want it to.  Change is good!!

I'd really like to believe this, but looking at the hair sprouting from my ears and nose in the mirror makes me hesitate.

I actually don't mind change, conceptually.  Software changes I typically do mind, based on every software change ever, with very few exceptions.  I do get pissed when people move things, though, or think like engineers instead of people.

So how does the theme development work?  Does the whole layout change (can it change?) or by "theme", do you mean just colors and such?

Btw, it isn't Windows 7 from 3.1 we are worried about, it is Windows 8 from 7.  Rodale did march a series of Windows 8 changes on us, all the while telling us we would like it better each time, and we never did.  We have been conditioned to hate software change.  I am sorry to hear we burned software bridges.  :(

Once we get things ironed out so we are mostly kind of gruntled, can we never change software again, or change only at the point of a sword at the very last minute?

It isn't just an application change, it is more like someone came in and got rid of our carefully curated farmhouse furniture and hired a German surrealist designer to decorate for us without our knowledge.  I know it isn't that severe, but this is the third place for lots of us, so there is some pushback.

I am sorry I missed the test forum - I like playing around with things and making suggestions at the appropriate time rather than after the fact.  Just stepping back and taking an objective  look at this, I think the + Quote thing is probably mainly responsible for spacing things out.  I think one of my favourite forum software layouts was the Jive Software - it was very tabular - I remember being able to see something like 50 topics per page because it was just one line per topic.  But I 'spose the mobile age is here so if this makes it better for that, maybe it isn't so bad.

I basically said screw mobile users on another thread, most post here from a real computer, I think that should be optimized.

I would think that working well on both platforms is not mutually exclusive.  I am with you on preferring the Grampa Box, but already we are close to running the world on these "phones", so eventually we have to embrace them, unless we just hop directly to whatever the next big thing is.

I see what happened here, you didn't give proper warning.  Proper warning would have had alarmist language like "I am ripping out the old software, discarding it like a twice-used condom, and replacing it with the same software the Canadian mounties use, but modified for crowd control in the Ukraine, then modified for bike forum use."

Good point!  It seems like more often than not, you DO need to hit people over the head with a 2 x 4. :D

I don't think I need permission to leave.  Friends has nothing to do with it.  Crap is crap.  You want me to say it smells like flowers?  Okay, since we are friends, crap smells like flowers.
