How long is life?

Notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger was sentenced today to two life sentences in prison plus five years

I don't get it.  What do they do.  Wait for him to die, resurrect him, and throw him back in jail?  Then when he dies, 5 more years as a corpse?

It feels like a cartoon where you draw a line in the sand and say don't cross this line.  Then when you cross it, you scratch out that line and draw a new one.

Life in jail should mean life in jail.  Plus no cable tv, no comforts at all.  You want to eat, you work doing something useful.  Make them ride bikes to generate electricity like the Brazilians.

He was convicted of multiple crimes, so he received multiple sentences. If some of the convictions get overturned on appeal, he still has other sentences to serve.

Yep, that's how it works. Guys like him have some value in keeping them alive. In return for increased privileges and the like, he can also roll over on other dudes, or provide advice to police on how to nab others.
