TrentonMakes Posted June 25, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 25, 2015 A few weeks ago I posted a photo of a steep grade I'd ridden, and someone commented how hard it is to take a photo that really makes a climb look as steep as it is. I noticed that this photo I took the weekend before last managed it. We were just walking; I didn't ride this - but I'd love to ride up there. This was in Jim Thorpe, PA. According to Google this is about 20% (but for less than 1/10 of a mile). Assuming they're built level, it seems getting a structure in the photo is effective. Let's see some other examples. Square Wheels Posted June 25, 2015 Share #2 Posted June 25, 2015 Wow, that's way too steep for me.
Parr8hed Posted June 25, 2015 Share #3 Posted June 25, 2015 That is one of the few pics I have seen that seems to portray the grade. There are some hills around here that leave me huffing, puffing, and sweaty. When I sit my purse down to take a pic it looks like a small ant hill. Wilbur ★ Posted June 25, 2015 Share #4 Posted June 25, 2015 Yep. The only way to accurately portray grade is a side shot with vertical or horizontal references. Buildings as posted or trees work too.
Dirtyhip Posted June 25, 2015 Share #5 Posted June 25, 2015 Yes, that is a steep one. I could grind up that. There are hills I regularly do that are 20%. I hit a 20% grade just this morning. Come visit me, peeps. I'll take you on a climbing ride.
TrentonMakes Posted June 25, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted June 25, 2015 I think I could ride this, for the couple hundred feet it's that steep. This town is shoehorned into a gorge with pretty steep walls. There's an old "gravity railroad" rail trail heading up out of town to the west that averages 15% for 6/10 mile. That'd be tough.
