One of my best friends from college was Vietnamese and I asked her. She told me it was pronounced like "Win".

 

Her name was "Nguyet" (the female version of the name, I think) and that was pronounced "We".

I suspect there is a lot of latitude in this area.  :)

I suspect you are right. 

My grandmother was born and raised in Lithuania, and she prounounced my last name in 2 syllables. My dad's 2 sisters were also born in Lithuania and pronounce it the same way. 

Dad was born in Salem MA, and he and I pronounce it in 3 syllables.

​bo-sox-yacht …… 3 syllables.  I think he got it right.  Them Lithuanians, they were wrong.
