Popular Post TrentonMakes Posted June 30, 2015 Popular Post Share #1 Posted June 30, 2015 On June 29, 2014, I pumped up the tires on the MTB and took off for a 15-mile ride which at the time was probably my longest ride in at least six years. On that ride I dogged it up a few climbs and quickly observed how much I'd lost during my years-long hiatus. Through October of last year I ended up with just over 500 miles. It was a long winter but I finally resumed riding in the spring and with the new bike I'm seeing segment times fall and average speeds increase, as I approach 300 miles on this year. This new bike (issues aside) has been great. I'm climbing better but I think the biggest impact on my riding is with these cranks, especially when I'm standing on the pedals. I feel like I'm taking such a big bite every pedal stroke and I feel that stroke getting smoother. On a flat or false flat I've been standing a lot more, for maybe a minute at a time, and that's getting me more into aerobic territory. I'm spending more and more time in the big ring - including almost the entire ride this morning (minus the last climb). Today, on June 30, 2015, I finished a 15-mile ride with a 16.3 mph average speed and if I ever rode that fast it was at least a dozen years ago. I feel like at age 43 I'm as strong a rider as I ever was. Still far short of most of you but the improvement I'm seeing is a hell of a motivator to keep going. How'd I get along without riding for so long? I always loved it and I still do. Hoping to keep going, at least for short rides, through the coming winter season. I know I should be cranking it up but it's easy to find something else to do. Always something else to throw on the schedule. It is just in my dotterage that I feel more like Kzoo describes. I would say it must be a western PA thing, except that longjohn is still out there kicking ass and taking names.
