Popular Post Thaddeus Kosciuszko Posted July 2, 2015 Author Popular Post Share #8 Posted July 2, 2015 I do apologize if my absence concerned some people... I appreciate your kind thoughts. I didn't think it wise, though, to announce on the interwebz that we were going to be overseas (and in Ohio ) for a couple of weeks. We went to Greece for my daughter's wedding. And before you ask, my daughter isn't back yet from her honeymoon and she asked us not to post wedding pictures before she returned. I don't want to be the one to face her wrath for not respecting her wishes! No waterfalls in the area of Greece we visited, other than the man-made one in the Athens city square. The climate was very dry - virtually no lakes, ponds, or streams. The few 'rivers' I saw seemed more like a typical NY creek than a river. I thought I did see a very tall waterfall when our plane flew over the Alps, but I couldn't get a camera angle on it through the plane window. Here's what I could get: We got a little lucky regarding the financial crisis. Greek citizens could only get 60 Euro per day, but we were able to get 400 per day. Last Friday and Saturday, before the banks closed for the week, we were able to withdraw some money from an ATM to get us through. I made sure not too many people were around to see the tourists getting more money than the citizens. The exchange rate was bad and the fees made it worse but we got the cash. Supposedly one could buy a condo in good condition in a small town for $45,000-50,000, but it would have taken around 125 days to get that much from the ATM . We left Greece yesterday - sorry to leave but ready to come home too. Nearly all small restaurants and businesses were operating on a cash only basis. No credit cards. Only international businesses, major hotels, and the upscale restaurants took credit cards. Even some gas stations were cash only. The protests you might have seen on TV were only a few blocks from our hotel. I thought about walking up to see the action, then decided I didn't need to get tangled up in an emotional crowd that might erupt into a less than peaceful demonstration. I'll post some more pictures as I get them sorted out and will post some wedding pictures once I get the 'approval' from my daughter.
