freighttraininguphill Posted November 21, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 21, 2013 I climbed Mix Canyon again on 11/9. For those who aren't familiar with this brutal climb, here's a website with pictures and plenty of info from another cyclist who's climbed it. This time I had 4 other riders with me. My regular riding partner Matthew and I had our own helmet-mounted GoPro HD Hero cameras, but the other three riders didn't own cameras. They all agreed to wear one, so I loaned my other 3 good cameras to them to mount on their helmets (2 GoPro HD Hero2s and 1 ContourHD). Originally I was going to make a video with climb footage from all five cameras, but it would've ended up way too long so I made individual climb videos for all of us. Since the descent is much faster I was able to make a combined footage descent video from the other 4 riders. I made a video of the entire descent from my camera since I was the fastest descender. Unfortunately I was the slowest climber.http://www.strava.com/activities/94179540http://connect.garmin.com/activity/402117426Here's some screenshots from the GoPro HD Hero2 worn by the other female cyclist in the group. She had a standard double and a 12-32 cassette, so she stopped often to avoid pushing too hard. She also did a little walking on the toughest part. Even so, she was still 2 minutes faster than me at the top. While she was waiting for me on her rest stops she got some good shots of the scenery and me climbing.>>Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr>>Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr>>Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on FlickrOne of the sections that was so steep I had to climb in the drops to avoid popping wheelies.>>Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on FlickrSteep!>>Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on FlickrThe top, finally!>>Climbing Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on FlickrGroup shot at the top>>Top of Mix Canyon 11-9-13 by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr Here's video of my climb (caution heavy breathing!). Here's the entire descent. It shows the two places I always stop to let my rims cool. Here's the video with all the descent highlights from the other 4 riders. You can find the videos of the other 4 riders' climbs on my YouTube channel here: http://www.youtube.com/user/cyclingfun2/videos. They are all grouped together with a date of 11-9-13.
Mr. Beanz Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 21, 2013 I'll check out the bids later when we get home from din din. Are those new wheels or a different bike?
freighttraininguphill Posted November 21, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted November 21, 2013 New (used) Rolf wheels from ebay. The bike also has upgraded components. My riding partner gave me his old 9-speed Ultegra parts to replace the 8-speed Shimano 2300/Sora stuff that came on the bike. He prefers SRAM Red and hates Shimano, so I gladly accepted the old parts! :D

smudge ★ Posted November 21, 2013 Share #5 Posted November 21, 2013 I watched about 2 minutes of the first climb video. You're right; heavy breathing! But knowing how that feels, my brain can't watch/listen to that while I'm sitting like a slug in my la-z-boy!! I'm gonna have to turn the volume down so I can get over the mental guilt. How long is that climb? And how do you know what grade? Holy heat build-up Batman. You need two places to let your rims cool? Dang. Looking at those pics, I believe it.

az_cyclist Posted November 22, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 22, 2013 and I as I may have posted in another thread, my son told me I should get a GoPro to record some of my rides.
freighttraininguphill Posted November 27, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted November 27, 2013 I haven't seen that thread yet, but I would love to see your videos! If you get a GoPro, be sure to remove the waterproof door and install the provided non-waterproof door, otherwise the camera will only pick up the loudest noises. Here's a pic of the two doors side-by-side so you can see what I'm talking about. The non-waterproof door is on the right. >>GoPro doors by freighttraininguphill, on Flickr
smudge ★ Posted November 30, 2013 Share #11 Posted November 30, 2013 Ya, the waterproof one is only recommended for underwater (of course) and going over 100 mph.
