And if I don't know how to do something, I'd rather screw it up first before asking for anybody's help.
0 torch511 Posted September 24, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 24, 2013 In preparation for my tri on sunday, I dismantled most of the bike, degreased, cleaned, polished and lubed everything. The bike looked spotless. However the weather was crappy the 4 hours leading up to the event and the course was wet. The bike needs a complete and utter cleaning and lubing all over again. Something to do tomorrow night after work.

0 Indy Posted September 24, 2013 Share #9 Posted September 24, 2013 Or we don't ride, so we don't have to. Live in a neighborhood with lots of kids that all know you fix bikes. Finding something that I need wrench on is never an issue.
0 jsharr ★ Posted September 24, 2013 Share #10 Posted September 24, 2013 I too am the neighborhood wrench. Got a buddy coming over this week with two bikes. One to get up and running for his son and one to fix up to sell, as he is buying a new Trek 8.3 DS. But the most rewarding wrenching I get to do is with an outreach program at our church for kids in single parent families. It is so cool to be able to watch a kid and a mom or dad just light up when you hand them a bike that works like it is supposed to.

We've got a shop down town that takes donated bikes and refurbs them for inner city kids. If I could find the time, I would so like to volunteer there. 0 jsharr ★ Posted September 25, 2013 Share #12 Posted September 25, 2013 Indy, find the time. It is so cool to get to give someone a working bike. I had one kid come to a work day and he helped me repack and adjust all the bearings on his bike. He learned a lot and I had a blast.

0 Page Turner Posted February 9, 2015 Share #14 Posted February 9, 2015 I am pretty sure the lack of posts here means that we don't maintain our bikes at all... Or we don't ride, so we don't have to. ...why do you keep saying "we" ?
0 ahsposo Posted February 11, 2015 Share #15 Posted February 11, 2015 I get the first impression the majority of members here are sort of like refugees that know what to do driven out by members that don't know what to do. I could be wrong but somehow having the social forum up top is telling...
0 onbike1939 Posted February 17, 2015 Share #16 Posted February 17, 2015 I've just answered a post I now see was posted in September so I do take the point in the OP. It's a pity though as this could be a useful resource.
0 maddmaxx ★ Posted February 26, 2015 Share #17 Posted February 26, 2015 I built my own bikes. They're bulletproof. Actually the routine annual tune up was done long before the winter got really cold and now the only work needed is on the engine.

I actually got around to changing it before GOBA "this year". See when I intend to do something I do it, it just might take awhile before I get inspired. I even installed gel pads under the tape.
