Speaking of City Councils...

Tybee's is "unique".  They seem to think they can tell the City Manager how to run the city, even to the point of trying to get her fired because she wouldn't do what they wanted her to do.  There WAS some questionable financial activity that could have led to that, but a post-audit review cleared her.  The control disagreement is still ongoing, but two new council members were elected last month, so that will be one thing to watch.

And, the police chief wanted to spend $29,000 for two license plate scanners, so allegedly they could count the traffic to and from the island, and see how many out of state visitors there were.  He did mention that the system could tie into national databases to check for stolen cars, outstanding warrants, yadda, yadda.  The initial vote was for acquiring them.  But, apparently, a LOT of citizens came forward with enough negative opinions that the purchase was scrubbed.  No mention was made of the ongoing cost of maintaining such a system, which would have been my concern.  So instead they will upgrade the much cheaper and simpler air-hose-across-the-road-system like they've had for the last 15 years.

Then there is the one "eco friendly" councilman who wants the city to buy an unused wind power generator that he says is just sitting in a warehouse, for $100,000.  That's just to buy it, not have it installed and tied in to the city's grid; and then it won't generate enough electricity to power much of anything on the island, but he's pushing hard to get it bought.

Small town politics are always interesting.

I bet there's a good reason it's sitting in a warehouse.

Tell Mr. Eco Councilman he has a good idea.  I'm sure he will agree. Then tell him because it's such a great idea he should use his own money to buy, install it, and let the town benefit.  When he waffles ask him to explain why, if it's such a good idea, he's so hesitant to use his own money so eager to use the taxpayers.
