Gump Posted December 9, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 9, 2013 We live in an area where it's not a big deal to keep your doors locked when we're not home during the day. Same thing with vehicles, my keys are always in the car. What's your neighborhood like?
Dirtyhip Posted December 9, 2013 Share #2 Posted December 9, 2013 I lock up. We see no reason in welcoming a thief. It's a pretty safe area, but we do have theft.

Chopped Liver Posted December 9, 2013 Share #4 Posted December 9, 2013 of course I do..... but if I didn't, Mollie would maul anyone that came into the house. She's a vicious little monster.
Square Wheels Posted December 9, 2013 Share #5 Posted December 9, 2013 We have a keypad for our front door. If the battery dies, we're screwed as we don't have a key hidden anywhere. Thanks for the reminder, where should I hide the key?
Road Runner Posted December 9, 2013 Share #6 Posted December 9, 2013 I keep everything locked all the time unless I am outside in the yard working. This area has a reputation for burglary and even some home invasion. Also, if you leave your car unlocked around here, you are an idiot.

jsharr ★ Posted December 9, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 9, 2013 I am not going to answer this. You know where I live. But, yes, I do lock my doors and I do not carry keys. This has been an issue when the power is out and garage door will not open. I solved that by installing a manual garage door bypass thingee from Home Depot.

Thaddeus Kosciuszko Posted December 9, 2013 Share #10 Posted December 9, 2013 We have a keypad for our front door. If the battery dies, we're screwed as we don't have a key hidden anywhere. Thanks for the reminder, where should I hide the key? You could get one of the 'rocks' to hide a key in. Then a burglar would know where to find it. You could also get one that looks like a sprinkler head, which might not be quite so obvious. Or, you could hide a battery inside the rock or fake sprinkler head instead of a key, assuming the battery is accessible at the keypad.
Dirtyhip Posted December 9, 2013 Share #11 Posted December 9, 2013 Locks just keep people honest. You can kick in a door pretty easily, if you really want to get in.

Thanks for the reminder, where should I hide the key? We have a shed in the back yard. I have a key hidden in it. My daughter who only lives about a mile away also has a key. Our neighborhood is getting pretty bad. Even though we have a 55 lb dog who barks like he's mean, we keep the place locked up when we aren't home. torch511 Posted December 9, 2013 Share #29 Posted December 9, 2013 The house is locked (and alarmed) when no one is home. My daughters typically lock it when I'm not home. If I am home then I don't bother locking it until bedtime. My cars however are unlocked - they are worth more stolen. So feel free to come by and steal either pieces of poo currently in the driveway. Heck, if you steal the caravan I won't even report it.

Road Runner Posted December 9, 2013 Share #31 Posted December 9, 2013 How can you lock your doors when you aren't home? You must have some kind of remote automated locking system to do that.
KrAzY Posted December 9, 2013 Share #32 Posted December 9, 2013 Nope.. we don't lock the door around here.. I'm fully insured incases of a robber comes. Plus I look at it as cleaning out the house, and it just might get rid of some of the crap we accumulated and don't use.
Kirby Posted December 10, 2013 Share #33 Posted December 10, 2013 Generally yes, although I've been known to forget to lock the sliding glass doors. This is generally a low crime area so I'm not terribly concerned, plus I have a number of retired neighbors who keep close tabs on all the comings and goings. .
