Permit me to educate you without googling.

The South was the textile center of the world from 1900-1960. Greenville, Chattanooga, etc were boom mill towns.

Working conditions in the mills were not always the best. IF you got a break, it was usually 10 minutes. Just enough time to down a pie and a dope. The sugar helped you through your 16 hour day.

Those were great days for the ruling class in Greenville. :)
