I am watching a sailing movie this morning.

Not just "a" sailing movie, but THE difinitive movie on sailing.

The skipper of this vessel is probably the best skipper to ever run up a main sheet.  Anyone who ever steps aboard a vessel should stive to emulate this salty man of the sea.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligans Isle.

So this is the talel of the castways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.

The first mate and the Skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.

So join us here each week my freinds,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castways,
Here on "Gilligan's Isle."

Also why would the skipper run up the line that controls the main sail?  You run sails up with halyards.

Halyards raise sails.

Sheets and in some cases guys, pull sails in or can be used to let sails out.

There are a host of other control lines to help shape the sail, including but not limited to the cunningham, the outhaul, the downhaul, the leach lines, the boom vang and the adjustable back stay.

Hey, it's been a while since I have sailed.  I don't know boats as well as I do livers and kidneys.

parr8, weren't you in the Navy?

Aye, I was in the Navy.  Two things wrong here:

1.  The Navy no longer uses saily boaty thingies.  Those are just for show.  They have boats that have big motors and even carry planes nowadays.

2.  Although I went through Navy boot camp I never once set my feet aboard a ship in an official capacity.  Hell, I never even saw a ship unless you count the USS Alabama that was de-comissioned in Mobile bay.  I went through Marine Corps Field Med School and spent all of my time with the Jarheads.  I was way more jarhead than I was sailor, even though my paycheck said Navy.
