Popular Post smudge ★ Posted July 12, 2016 Popular Post Share #1 Posted July 12, 2016 The niece from AZ was in the Yoop for a few days, and we got together Saturday and Sunday for some fun. I rented a fatbike for her. I knew the little kid bike was going to be too small for her, and it doesn't go through the sand at camp very well. So I decided she is big enough to learn how to ride a fat bike. I guess she has a bike at home that has hand brakes, so she only had to learn about shifting. And this bike only had a rear derailieur. Had there been more than a single up front. I'd have told her to just leave that alone. She enjoyed this shifting business. I did have to remind her a few times that a hill was coming up and she needed to shift before the hill. I thought I found a nice, easy trail in Ishpeming, but it wasn't. We tried, but it was classic Marquette County; it was hilly and sandy. She liked the downhill, but uphill was a bitch. We basically gave up and went to McD for burgs and fries. We then went out to camp and rode to Black River Falls. She likes to get off the bikes, check out the falls, and explore back into the woods. It makes me a little scared knowing I am the one she is relying on to get us back to the bikes after we've messed around in the woods, but luckily I've realized I just have to listen for the falls. She also likes crawling around on the rocks just below the falls to get to the other side and explore the woods over there. Unfortunately for that plan, we've been getting good rain, so the water level at the falls was too much to get across the river/lower falls. We still spent plenty of time exploring. The next day I went back up, and we rode more. We went down the camp road just to put on some miles. We didn't get as far as I'd hoped because she was being followed by a gang of bugs. We had sprayed with but spray, but she hates bugs and was being harrassed by them; so we turned around. On the way back we decided to pick up trash along the road. At one point she stopped and pointed out a bit of trash (I had the trash bag) and realized she saw a couple blueberries. She got off her bike and picked the berries. Then the more we looked, the more berries we saw. There were MANY berries. It really surprised me; I didn't think it was time for them yet. We must have picked for 15 minutes. No, we didn't save any; they all went directly into our mouths! She declared, "#blessed," and I couldn't have agreed more. I told her I was glad some of the berries were still white. I could go back in a couple weeks and eat more berries. She asked if I would think of her while I picked berries. I said yup, I'll be glad I get to eat them all myself and not have to share with her. Ha!! We had a good chuckle over that. Later we went back to Black River Falls to pick up the trash we had gathered the day before. We didn't have a bag to haul the trash back to camp, so we went back on Sunday to pick it up. I saw these cuties on the camp road on the way back to camp. She did really well for her first time on a big bike with fat tires and shifting. No crashes, no messed up transmissions, all good.
