Politics and Religion

Square Wheels

Recommended Posts

SWF is a site for fun, even sometimes for cycling posts.  It is not a site for politics, religion, arguing or bickering.  We initially created the Politics and Religion section of this site for a place to move contentious posts to, and a place for people to vent their political and religious views.

The internet is full of places for posting religious and political posts, I feel these posts no longer fit the culture of our site.

Effective today, the P&R section of the site is no longer available.  Please remember our rules.  Posts related to politics or religion will be hidden and warning points may be issued.

Thank you for your continued commitment to making this site better.

It's your site and you can do what yo want with it. Personally I think most subjects have an element of politics, religion or both and to discourage any inclusion of such inevitably leads to a takeover by what I'd characterise as teen-threads mostly involving popular culture and celebs.

I don't spend time in there much, but was happy it was there.

So now we can't talk about politics or religion at all?  Personally, I think trying to overly control posts is a bad idea.

Bike topics are my favorite, but even in those threads people have opinions.  Some opinions are strong.

P&R was the only reason I even came to this forum...so, bye.

I thought it was nice that there was a place that posts could be taken if not in line with the tone of the cafe.  I didn't go in much, but I thought it was nice that it was there.

Did something happen to cause a rethink?

I think it was 2 things.  1)  SW didn't want to monitor it, and 2) the powers to be in this forum didn't want it.  This place is a niche clique forum that talks a big game of generating new traffic but in the end it's really not that at all.

Seems to be. Without a P&R section it has absolutely no value to me. The cycling specific areas are barren wastelands, so I don't get why this forum has anything to do with cycling. Meh, no big loss as most of the people I know are on a facebook group together anyway.

Well we wouldn't want to change the culture of the site....oh dear me no.

However this culture has included extremely nasty, sexist posts in a thread which denigrated women and still includes a "Bikini" thread which many would claim continues the same honourable tradition. Ah well...a pity I feel as it has been moribund until recently. :(

P&R was created out of need, a need to have a place to put posts that the vast majority of people here don't want to see.  This was a poor way of regulating the rules of not allowing P&R posts in the other sections.

Also, a tactic some people would use, and often joke about, is to sully someone's thread with a P&R post within a thread knowing that it will get the whole thread moved.

Yes, politics have spilled out into the other sections, making it harder to regulate, again using the technique of simply moving the whole thread.

There are not many posts in there, and it was only by a few people, and at least one has already bid us farewell admitting they have better avenues to post this info.

Absolutely right....a few...so not worth worrying about..... adhering to the principle of "Never mind the quality...feel the width"

Do you feel this is the best venue to discuss politics and religion?  Aren't there better sites with more lively and robust discussions?

Was this place a refuge for people kicked out of other sites?  I'm not judging, just asking.

No but I get the sense you and others are trying to preserve this sanctuary for those who call it sanctuary.  I appreciate that.  I'm simply stating that losing people like the RJM's of the world are not the people you want to be losing.

I don't want to lose anyone.  I am not asking anyone to leave, I am just asking them not to post politics and religion here.

I personally came here because I was tired of the P&R scene over there.  I  did not officially get the boot until I came over here when I saw their bullshit monitoring and I called them on it.  There used to be a former mod over there that had been with them for 10 years that came in here and confirmed our suspicions.  I wouldn't assume that just because they had issues 'over there' that they are the problem.

I thought that was the whole point of the P & R forum, keep those posts away in a place that you don't really have to monitor and keep the cafe fun and lively.  Perhaps the people that want to poke the bear in P& R take a break here and decide to add to the fun and lively world for a while, it didn't (from my persepective) seem to hurt the cafe a whole lot.

I don't think I am amped up one way or another about it because I didn't go there much, but maybe a vote unless you have already decided to kill it with fire?

I appreciate you not judging but perhaps the time to ask was before you closed P&R.

I saw absolutely nothing wrong with the venue and as it was a closed forum and needed a password for access, I'm puzzled as to why you saw it as somehow a threat to the nature of this forum. I was unaware of anything offensive in there and believe me when I say that the sexist and degrading thread I refer to in my earlier post would never, never have been written by any of the posters active in your P&R sub-forum.

As to it being a refuge of sorts then I have to say this cannot be entirely true. I'm not banned, neither has max, nor has Page or RJM, and Dotman took himself off. FX is in and out on a regular basis but Late was banned......in a very irregular fashion despite him being a long-standing member and never having been banned before to my knowledge.

^^^ Correct.  I don't think it was seriously spilling over at all into the cafe.  The few times it did (that I'm aware of) were made by people new to the forum and the quickly adhered to the rules.  Look SW, it's your place and ultimately you make all the rules... so it's your right to do what you want.  I personally don't agree with it but whatever.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
