JerrySTL ★ Posted September 27, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2013 Smithsonian magazine detailed in August the exhaustive measures that military officials have taken to finally block relentless Richardson's ground squirrels from tunneling underneath Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana and interfering with the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles on 24/7 standby. For example, officials had to use trial-and-error to plant underground screens deeper into the ground than the squirrels cared to dig. A day after that report was published, a bus driver in Gothenburg, Sweden, crashed into a tree (with six passengers requiring hospital treatment) after swerving to avoid a squirrel in the road. On the same day, a New York Times reporter disclosed that his own news monitoring for 2013 revealed that squirrels have caused 50 power outages in the U.S., in 24 states so far this year after invading electric company substations. Longjohn ★ Posted September 27, 2013 Share #3 Posted September 27, 2013 My wife ran over a beautiful black squirrel about a mile up the road from our house two weeks ago. She cried. I think it's funny, she tries to miss various rodents on the road and ends up hitting them. I stop for dogs and cats if they are in the road but pretty much ignore rodents, almost never hit any.
