I tried to put enough backstory in book 2 that you won't be lost if you read it first. The idea is not to retell the first story, but make you want to go back and read it. You'll understand the characters better if you read the first, but it isn't required. If you want, I can email the the first book to you in whatever format you like (mobi, ePub, pdf, etc...).
