Caretaker Posted May 23, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2017 I know I have, many times. I don't enjoy driving, I see it just as a means to an end. Living in a city I could easily get round by bike, public transport (free for people my age) or on foot. The reason I don't go 'car free' is simple.....family commitments. Ralphie ★ Posted May 23, 2017 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2017 I think aboot it almost every day, but it is just not happening. I love driving, but hate the expense and mass consumption of resources and just the pure futility of driving to work everyday. .
maddmaxx ★ Posted May 23, 2017 Share #3 Posted May 23, 2017 I love driving. I do feel sorry though for those of you who have to drive in city traffic. I've done everything from 17 hour grinds behind the wheel and 180 mile jaunts for lunch to 8 second trips at almost 200 mph. I will hate it when they take my keys away.

Wilbur ★ Posted May 23, 2017 Share #5 Posted May 23, 2017 While we have commuter trains, express buses, city buses, street cars and subways, there is nothing that gets me from the city I live in to the airport so nope, not even a thought.
sheep_herder ★ Posted May 23, 2017 Share #6 Posted May 23, 2017 Tough to live several miles outside of a small town and raise livestock and not own cars and trucks. We have places 30 miles apart, separated by at least 20 miles of gravel road.

That is me. No car. Last motor was a camper van, that was worth the having, and I'd have another.

Randomguy Posted May 23, 2017 Share #9 Posted May 23, 2017 I hate driving with a passion, it is only a means to get to a location. If I could do it without driving, I will. I just don't understand how it can be fun, and if you have the fastest car in the world, you still have speed limits and it would still suck after a while. Dottleshead ★ Posted May 23, 2017 Share #10 Posted May 23, 2017 I definitely have. Cars are such a huge expense. But where i moved to, i will be dependent upon them for the forseeable future.

Reverend_Maynard Posted May 23, 2017 Share #12 Posted May 23, 2017 I've thought about it. My father lived that lifestyle. But then it would be me on my bike against the practically unattended death wagons every single day. Not sure I'd survive it.
LoneWolf Posted May 23, 2017 Share #13 Posted May 23, 2017 About as often as I think about giving up drinking. Never. It's about the only time I have near total freedom and control.
ChrisL Posted May 23, 2017 Share #14 Posted May 23, 2017 Not really possible for me but with the proliferation of companies like Uber & Lyft it could be doable for many people. Just hitch a ride when needed. When you factor car note, insurance, gas & maintenance there could be a case to be made for calling uber when needed. Zephyr Posted May 24, 2017 Share #15 Posted May 24, 2017 Nope. My life is too full right now. I don't like driving, it is a waste of my time, and I don't think they'd let me on the bus with my stinky hockey and/or dive gear They day they finally invent the Star Trek transport thingy, will be the last day I drive anywhere
MickinMD ★ Posted May 24, 2017 Share #16 Posted May 24, 2017 The limitations of the inadequate transportation around most U.S. cities, including mine, prohibit me from ever considering it. I'm 66 and, having seen how badly some of my 80+ year-old neighbors and relatives have driven, I'm praying that heavily-assisted-driving cars are available in 14 years and onward to help me parallel park, no go over white of yellow lane lines, avoid driving over curbs, etc.
