I respectfully disagree with the purportedly noble notion of living your life for others or of giving a large part of your life for others.

First of all, if you're going to give a large part of your life to others, what makes you so sure other people even want it?

If you spend a large part of your life satisfying yourself by giving to others, then at some point you in turn become an encumbrance to others because you've done nothing or done little to take care of yourself.

I think it better to live for oneself - to be responsible for oneself so not to be a burden on others; using, expanding, and cultivating the talents one has, to take time and opportunities to learn, to follow the rules of civility and respect, and to work with a will to earn one's way to financial independence.

Note that living for oneself does not mean living to the exclusion of others or to cause harm to others, or that becoming financially independent means taking away from others, or that to live for oneself one must selfishly shove others aside or trample them underfoot.  These misconceptions are reinforced by the stereotyping of successful people as greedy and heartless, who always make their gains illegally or immorally.

Consider: if more people lived for themselves so as not be a burden on others and to work their way to financial independence, then how much more would be available to assist those who are truly in need?
