The tool kit, or the separate items?

If you were in charge of fixing all the bikes (which, you are), would you want the kit of tools, including that thing you'd use infrequently, or would you want to purchase only what you need, when you need it?

I buy what I need.  It has always seemed to me that the kits are adequate but never the best tool for the job.  Many times handles are too thin and sharp for comfortable use........that's a function of a kit designed for limited use.  Over the years I've found specific individual tools that I like better.  

But then again, over the years I've made some of my own custom tools like a 2 1/2 foot long pedal wrench.    made by cutting a ground down open end wrench in half and welding a pipe into the middle of the two ends.
