Popular Post Thaddeus Kosciuszko Posted September 25, 2017 Popular Post Share #1 Posted September 25, 2017 Today I decided to set aside a few moments from an otherwise agenda-driven weekend to stop at Manor Kill Falls. I'd stopped here several years ago but today since I was driving within a hundred yards of the falls I made the stop again. This time I discovered there was a trail along one bank of the kill (or creek) - not a clandestine trail but a real trail specifically set aside for hiking. A sign said something about the "Long Trail' so maybe it was part of the Appalachian Trial; I haven't looked it up yet. Anyway, the trail ran close enough to the upper part of Manor Kill Falls to get, I thought, a rather nice view Walking back, I knew there was a lower falls just by the sound, so again I followed the trail. Sadly the brush and trees blocked a decent view of the lower falls, so at first all I got was this which in reality was only slightly better than what this picture shows. So I looked around a bit and found a place that I thought might provide a better vantage point. I clambered down this which was right above this Just beyond that gap between the two trees was a vertical drop of about 50 to 60 feet or so. The footing wasn't all that here great either. The picture makes it look like the ledge was level but it sloped rather steeply to the trees. I found a couple of crevices in the rock to jam my hands into so if my feet gave way I wouldn't skid off the ledge and splat on the creek bed. Once past this point I could brace myself against a third tree to get the pictures. Anyway, once there I found the view was much better. I experimented with a couple of settings on the camera; I'm not sure which photo I like better Once I got the photos I clambered back out and back to the car. It was a good stop for me. The sights and sounds of the falls, and the quiet of the woods I found most refreshing. Even though I'd seen the falls once before I realized that today I saw them anew.
sheep_herder ★ Posted September 25, 2017 Share #2 Posted September 25, 2017 Nice photos, and yes, you are more adventurous than me. I am not very sure footed.
Kirby Posted September 25, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 25, 2017 Very pretty and I'm glad you weren't hurt on the walk or taking the pics.
Airehead Posted September 25, 2017 Share #4 Posted September 25, 2017 I wonder how much water flows there and how seasonal it is--- rocks show both little and heavy wear.

I went on another ride, not so much an MTB ride but more of a trail ride, and faceplanted in the middle of a rather large mud puddle. Oh wait, I think that was the one you saw and regretted not getting the video with your phone... All that being said, I'm up to considering most any kind of adventure despite my dearth of MTB skills provided there's an opportunity for me to lie about what actually happened and save myself from complete disgrace. As far as free time is concerned I know at least the next two weekends my time is committed to others but after that I may be able to set time aside for myself. The second 3.8 mile section is billed as "snowmobile trail". How accessible Sand Lake Falls is from the trail is up for grabs, too. (And don't forget - there's no law north of Remsen). We started to hike it, but Gus was done after two miles.

The website for the Link Trail is very similar and the info is good. (Which, BTW if you ever deign to visit the rotten core of the state, I can play trail guide on)
Digital_photog ★ Posted September 25, 2017 Share #10 Posted September 25, 2017 I got a picture of the falls too. It was easier than your adventure. I never had to leave my computer. I think your adventure sounds more fun.

Looking for the Falls, if they're not visible from the trail, will just be another dimension to the adventure. I have to hand it to you, you do find great rides. 45 minutes ago, maddmaxx said: You do understand the second reason that these are called falls don't you? Please be careful out there. I do appreciate your very kind concern. In those situations I typically have a back up plan and a back up back up plan if things start to go wrong, but you've made a fair point: an epitaph of 'He died trying' isn't the most impressive...

The route from Bear Creek is driveable for the first half. I know, because a car passed us on its way out. ? Snowmobile trails in there are typically rideable with some massive mudholes (I’ve ridden and hiked in to Chub Pond). The route from Bear Creek is also the “high ground” - which, given the fact that there’s only about 3” of soil before you hit rock doesn’t mean much. 9 hours ago, Thaddeus Kosciuszko said: an epitaph of 'He died trying' isn't the most impressive... Who cares about the epitaph? I wanna know about the will - “Did he leave me his bikes?”
