Mad as a hatter

It's been my understanding that it's because hatters used mercury in the felting process when making such hats.

It would seem that Lewis Carroll's "Mad Hatter" would have made much less sense as a name unless the the saying "Mad as a hatter," was already in vogue.

Because we are planning dinner in Phoenixville, PA for Tuesday night.  Our Airedale friend from Austriala asked me to invite a guy from Texas who will be at the show too.  I said that I did not know him and she said, "He is mad as a hatter but harmless."  So now we are 16 for dinner.
