shotgun Posted October 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 13, 2017 I just started using Strava a couple weeks ago after hooking up on a group ride. The other day, my phone's gps signal went cray cray. It fuced up again on tonight's ride. WTF?
Wilbur Posted October 13, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2017 It doesn't take much to block an iPhone gps signal. Just a layer of fabric or even under trees.

If you want to truly use Strava, just go with a Garmin - bike computer or watch. Tom

I knew you Canuckistanis were a bit off, but wearing under trees? That could lead to a horrible case of PRI.

Yeah, that's not it. I'm out in the open and it can't find a signal. I've used nav apps in my car on the same phone for three years and never had problems before. The guys I was riding with didn't have problems with a signal last night either.

There are many other options, but the BEST is a Garmin. But not knowing your level of commitment to cycling or desire for details and accuracy, I wouldn't know where "no good" starts vs "good enough". Wilbur Posted October 13, 2017 Share #12 Posted October 13, 2017 I use this in the airplane. It feeds the mapping apps on our iPads. It may work in a saddle bag. https://bad-elf.com/pages/be-gps-2200-detail

Longjohn Posted October 13, 2017 Share #14 Posted October 13, 2017 I’ve never had trouble with Strava on my iPhone. I have noticed people running garmin on the same ride show a lot more elevation. The miles are the same.

Kzoo Posted October 13, 2017 Share #16 Posted October 13, 2017 Kobalt might work in a emergency. If that was all I had I'd use it before spending money on another expensive piece of delicate equipment.
shotgun Posted October 14, 2017 Author Share #17 Posted October 14, 2017 I followed some instructions that I found on the google. I also installed an app that is supposed to reset my gps. It tracked my drive home from work just fine. KOM! It tracked our dog walk. Seems to be working. ...and I didn't have to buy a dedicated device. Hopefully, it doesn't decide to screw up again on my next ride.

A friend of mine was using a mapping app while driving a race route a few years ago. What he didn't realize was Strava was tracking the drive and reset KOMs all along the route! There were cyclists with pitchforks and torches assembling before he even finished the course! I guess Strava got several angry messages to protest his KOMs. Cyclists can be real assholes!

Actually, I finally decided to bring my avatar current with my beer drinking style. I've been drinking mostly IPAs for a couple years now. That one in my avatar is a local IPA called Hops, Sweat, & Tears.

Longjohn Posted October 14, 2017 Share #24 Posted October 14, 2017 My favorite watering hole in town just tapped a keg of Dogfishhead 120 minute IPA today. They have some serious competition now. A place one mile down the road that used to be "Benjamin's" just reopened and they are having some kind of Dogfishhead celebration with all of their beers. I think that is why Hicks tapped the 120 minute. Pennsylvania is trying to go normal now, we have gas stations selling craft beer and wine and grocery stores selling it too. The beer distributors are now allowed to sell any quantity, even singles. They used to only sell by the case or keg.

All gps functions are still screwed up - google maps, waze, strava, photo geo tags. It works when it wants to. I talked to our phone guy in IT about it. He's not surprised about it with a three year old phone and suggested I have my boss request a replacement phone. Upper management will probably shoot that down. I am still amazed that my work flip phone now works perfectly after going through the washer. I did the rice thing, and it was touch and go for a while, but now it is back to full function! Undoubtedly it was because it was washed in a water-saving front loader as opposed to a soak 'er top loader. Still, that old Samsung s TOUGH! It had condensation for a week or so and was typing funkily, but now you'd never know.
