American dream has not died, it just exists in Canada

I agree, global warming is noticeable in Canada because it's our country that has more glaciers, huge hunks of the Arctic...and that's where the climate change science starts.  Anyway they are predicting higher water flooding...

As an ex-Ontariorian (where I lived , worked in TO for 20+ yrs., grew up in Waterloo), it bothered me when several years ago here in Alberta at the peak of our oil economy boom, some Albertans were sneering at Ontario. Just arrogant and unaware of the diverse economic powerhouse of southern Ontario for rest of Canada.  It really is:  very high concentration of major universities, technical colleges, cross-collaborations with industry for decades not just in STEM, but other disciplines also.

It's not a good comparison to compare the Toronto Region to other cities without their suburbs.

Of course, we in Maryland are trying to attract Amazon. The suburbs of D.C. plus Annapolis and Baltimore less than 30 miles away include a similar well-educated population, one of the world's major ports, and three international airports that straddle the middle of the highways and railroads stretching across the most dense population area of North America.

On the other hand, Amazon seems to want so much that whoever gets it may not see much of a benefit unless they are in a high unemployment area.

Buffalo/Rochester has the inside track. In addition to the nicest climate in the world from May to October, the housing market will get you a typical 2000 sf house for less than $200,000. Plenty of fresh water recreation, cycling, hiking, and 2 wine regions.

Also 60 colleges and universities. Plus me, Tude, Couch, Airehead right in the area.

The prices on those real estate shows from Kanada make it seem like a nightmare to me!

For the lower socio-economic class, it is becoming hard to live anywhere. Rents are skyrocketing and there are no protections on rent increases. We have a rental.  The price we charge is about $150 below market value.  We raise their rent every year, but only at the rate of about 3%.  This is fair, and we can sleep at night.  Our renters love us, but the ROI isn't what it really should be.  On a positive note, they take great care of our place and treat us and the home with a ton of respect.  Getting them out is going to be sad, when we get ready to sell it to use the money.  It will have to be a forced eviction, on an expired lease once it goes back to month to month.

Can they possibly buy it from you?

They don't seem to save one penny of their pay.  Things like new four wheel motorcycles, big screen TVs in every room, and other expensive items are more of a priority.

Their credit isn't good enough to buy a home either.  If I were to do an owner carry, I would want an enormous down payment.  They don't have it and I don't want to carry a borrower.

My dyslexic eyes were watering for a sec, and I wondered:  Why would Amazon want an incest climate?

Read it again, sorry.

Portland put in a bid. Almost as an after thought. Just so they could be associated with the cool people. the property has already been planned and Amazon does not fit the planned uses at all. Fortunately Portland was late enough in the bid that they won't spend much on the proposal. How much are postcards to mail? Like $1.50 right? Wasted, down the drain

F Amazon

Seems like it exists in Vancouver and Toronto. But how is that different from Seattle, Portland, San Fran, LA, San Diego, Denver, Houston, New York, Chicago, Boston, DC, Philly, Atlanta, Miami, yada yada yada??? Canada, like the US, has gaps outside the major cities that are the trouble spots.

In the US, the "American Dream" isn't really a struggle for the professional class. It is a struggle for those not in the professional class. That's the problem. We need to make it so folks can achieve their optimal life without being "forced" to follow a professional job path, when the reality is that service careers are where most will end up.

You have Trump. The dream is dead.  Unless you dream of being an isolationist.
