That folks are riding in the central swath in equal degrees, but without tracking in Strava (or Garmin)? I'd guess terrain and population density would be the two bigger factors, since it seems like Strava is represented well across all other regions/demographics on that US map. It might be parts of TX, OK, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas aren't too dense so not many riders are logging enough miles to be "bright".
