One would think we knew better.

Veterans Day.  Golf.  Six foursomes.  I'm in group one.  Get to the first green.  Cool.  The pins have American flags on them.  I tend the flag first.  My routine is to grab the pin, lay it gently down on the green so as not to mark the green up.  We finish putting out.  Put the pin back in.  Nobody, especially me, sees the problem.

Second hole.  Same thing.

Third hole.  One of the foursome, not even a veteran, says "That's what these things are for."  He points to the side of the green where there is a red/white/blue stick stuck in the ground and a 'V' at the top.  About three feet tall.  I had noticed them on the first two greens but didn't think a thing about it.  Ding!  Don't lay the flag on the green dumass.  We finish out the round using the sticks to keep the flag off the ground when we pulled the pins.

We watch as the remaining groups come in to the 18th.  Only two other groups use the support, and they started out the same way we did.  The rest dropped the pin on the green, sometimes twice.
