Popular Post jsharr ★ Posted April 9, 2018 Popular Post Share #1 Posted April 9, 2018 This weekend was District Camporee for our Boy Scouts. As part of the event, The Order of The Arrow had a call out, or nominating event for new prospective members. This is done in a solemn ceremony at the camp fire on Saturday night. Members are selected by nomination by their scout troops. Anyway, I was invited to attend the campfire by the OA, as they are part of my staff for this camp and I got called out. It is a big honor for me as the mission and purpose of the Order is one of the main reasons why I Scout. I do not have any pictures, as the event is held in a solemn manner and there were no flashlights, cameras, etc. For over 100 years, the Order of the Arrow (OA) has recognized Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. This recognition provides encouragement for others to live these ideals as well. Arrowmen are known for maintaining camping traditions and spirit, promoting year-round and long term resident camping, and providing cheerful service to others. OA service, activities, adventures, and training for youth and adults are models of quality leadership development and programming that enrich and help to extend Scouting to America's youth. Mission The mission of the Order of the Arrow is to fulfill its purpose as an integral part of the Boy Scouts of America through positive youth leadership under the guidance of selected capable adults. Purpose As Scouting’s National Honor Society, our purpose is to: Recognize those who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and through that recognition cause others to conduct themselves in a way that warrants similar recognition. Promote camping, responsible outdoor adventure, and environmental stewardship as essential components of every Scout’s experience, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp. Develop leaders with the willingness, character, spirit and ability to advance the activities of their units, our Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation. Crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

When I was at scout camp the kids that were being inducted into O of A were not aloud to talk. What’s that all about? It is supposed to be a test of your cheerfulness and spirit and to allow a time of reflection is the official word. It was not too hard for me to be silent, as I was feeling poorly and headed to my cot to sleep as soon as I got back to the dining hall.
