I coached high school track and field in Maryland and attended coaches clinics for field events in Pennsylvania and New Jersey where there would always be a training session for the Javelin. Maryland does NOT allow the Javelin in high school track and field. PA and NJ and other nearby states whose coaches attended those clinics do have the Javelin! I attended one of those sessions once just so I could meet the World Champion who was doing the session and it seemed safe enough to me if you've got a wide-open empty field to throw it into. We never had a problem with guys putting a 12-lb shot 50 feet even if they were sometimes not put in the middle of the throwing zone! I never could find out why the Javelin was originally banned, but I bet it something happened that was similar lawn darts for drunk adults!
