Always thinking about a new bike

I am considering selling my Fargo and Casseroll and replacing them with one bike and two wheel sets. One set of wheels for road and gravel, one set for bikepacking.

Rocky Mountain Solo comes with 700x40c tires, but will fit 27.5x2.2.

or Salsa Cutthroat comes with 29 X 2.2, could run 40c tires.

CUTTHROAT APEX 1

Or I could just keep riding the two bikes I have and be happy with them.

Well 3 bikes may be the best right!?!?  If you went 1 bike 2 sets of wheels would you keep rotors on both or swap them?  Seems like a pita to swap rotors.

My vote is for the Salsa, I like their bikes and the Spearfish was on my short list.

I would have rotors on each set of wheels as well as a cassette and tires. Swap and roll.

I like the Salsa a lot, but the Rocky Mountain is $600 less so I could get the bike and both wheel set ups for the price of the Cutthroat. The downside is my local Rocky Mountain dealer did not order any Solos, so I would have to order one. The LBS next to my apt has a fleet of Cutthroats.

Does the Warbird you liked not fit the bill?

I checked out the Salsa site to see when the new Warbird will come out, and I realized their dealer network in my area stinks :(  I wish they were in a few more LBS near me.  I wonder if that is on their end or the blame lies with LBS folks not diversifying.

The Warbird is more road/gravel oriented. I believe 42C is the largest tire size it will accommodate. I like a bigger tire for bikepacking like 2.0 or larger.

The lack of dealers in your area is probably on the shops. Salsa is a small brand, but growing their dealer network. REI picked them up recently, but I'm not sure what they carry in their stores.

Salsa production runs are very tight. You rarely see them on overstock closeout. If shops don't order pre-season, they typically can't get bikes mid-season.

Yeah - the DC REI is Salsa's only DC dealer.  VA and MD have dealers, but all are slightly smaller shops, and not as close to me as a half dozen or more shops that don't carry Salsa :(

I tried out a cutthroat on Monday but decided to keep my fargo.  I do like the Cutthroat. Haven't been on the casseroll since last fall.

Yeah, he can downsize the bike rack on his Lamborghini to a single bike carrier from his 2 bike carrier.

I live in the land of fancy cars. The local grocery store has 6 Tesla charging stations. I know a guy who owns three Ferraris and a Porsche. Cayennes, Land Rovers, and all that around here. I drive an 03 Civic that the paint is flying off. Mostly I ride my bike around town. I don't lock my car and leave the keys in the ignition.

There is nothing wrong with my Fargo or Casseroll. They are heavy bikes and once I load them with gear, much heavier. That's a lot of weight to haul up mountains. The cantis on the Casseroll are a drawback on descents of 1-5 miles. My hands get sore. The Solo weighs 22 lbs and the Cutthroat is 23 lbs. My Fargo is 30 and Casseroll is around 25 lbs.

Salsa as a brand appeals to a niche audience. They don't offer a traditional road bike. They're motto is adventure by bike. They have been at the forefront of gravel bikes, fatbikes, and bikepacking setups. The first Fargo was released in 2008. All of the big players waited until about last year to compete. They beat Trek and Specialized to the fatbike market by a few years. They essentially have 3 engineers designing all of their bikes.

Just read this on the Salsa site. Shoots down my plans. I think for now I'll keep the bikes I have and play it by ear. I found a shop that has the Solo in stock, but it's two hours from here. I guess if I'm over there, I might stop in for a test ride.

We recommend staying at or above 50c/1.9'' or larger (up to 2.4"). Anything smaller will drop the bottom bracket, effect handling negatively, and also increase the chances of pedal strikes. We designed the bike around the tire size that is included with the bike and that size really makes the bike shine. Thanks!

"Cutthroat", "Warbird", "Solo"........who names these things anyway ? Why not just buy a "Psycho  Killer" and be done with it ?

the Cutthroat is named for the cutthroat trout. It is the state fish in every state the GDMBR passes through.

The Fargo has a handlebar named the woodchipper. They have a pretty good sense of humor

I agree Salsa has a done a good job with their branding and marketing in recent years.

Surly does a good job naming their stuff too.

Big Fat Dummy, Bill & Ted, Karate Monkey, Bridge Club, Larry, Rolling Darryl. I looked at the Gorilla Monsoon briefly too.

...why stop there ?  The Spesh Hannibal Lecter will break sales records, and a bike called the Trek Zodiac is to die for. :)
