This group is surely a close second, but the smartest group I hung with were my fellow scholarship grad students at IIT when I was in my early-mid 20's.

It's been all downhill intellectually since then.

We would argue for days over trivial stuff like "How bright, as seen from Earth, was the Supernova of 1054 A.D. that created the Crab Nebula?"
