I strongly dislike car shopping

Sooooo.  GEICO totalled my truck.  Offered me about 5k less than I paid for it pre tax.    Thousands more than I owe on it, but I would like more.  Probably not going to get it.

So I have to start car shopping.  As much as I loved the truck, I did not enjoy the mileage or the payments, but I do like the way it held value.  Only cost me about 1500 per year to drive based on what Gieco is giving me.  Not bad.  Down side is that used trucks of the same year cost the same or more than what Geico is giving me and I am not sure I want to spend that right now.

So I think I want a mid sized SUV that is a few years old.  Found this GMC that I am going to go look at.  Same year as my old truck, lower miles, more features, but a lot smaller.

Should cut my payments in half and give me much better mileage.  Still has factory warranty left.

Thoughts?

Then Geico needs to give you more, insurance is supposed to pay replacement value.  So you should get the amount needed to go out and buy the exact same thing you had.  The few times I've had a vehicle totaled, I've actually came out ahead even.

I always buy off lease.

You have to shop around some, and when you find something you like, take it to a good mechanic. While he has it up on the lift, take a shop light and look at everything. I was considering a used Accord once, no one found anything wrong. It had new rustproofing, but when I looked myself, there were small bands of rust at top of each wheel well. They hadn't bothered taking off the tires when they hid the rust. Prob submerged in salt water. I also go to a cheapie oil change place, just to be sure the engine wasn't honeyed.

After I get it, I change the oil and filter on a monthly basis until the oil stays clean.

I usually run these cars 10-15 years. I pay off the loan in 2 or 3 years, and try to get a decade without car payments.

Not my insurance paying for this.  They gave me a fair offer for a 2015 Silverado, but I have to pay off the note, and I just do not want to finance a new truck right now.

YOUR insurance should be going to bat for you and getting you (or giving you) the difference.

Or, just threaten to sue the driver/other insurance company unless they give you FULL replacement value.

In order to do that, I have to pay my deductible, etc.   I am not sure that I would get that much more, if any.  My truck had some light damage and they did not ding me for it.

Here is what my truck is worth according to a friend who is an insurance adjuster.  He said this is a decent offer that there might be a bit more money, but not much.   And bear in mind that mine had some slight chips, a small ding in a fender and some hail damage.  They offered me 26K.

You'd pay your deductible up front but then they would get that back from the other folks and refund it to you, correct? You're not out the deductible when it is some other person's problem.

Still - you should NOT be screwed over for someone else's mistake. PERIOD.  You are completely in the right to expect and demand full compensation for the truck. Considering you now have to shop for the new truck and all the associated headaches of that, the LEAST they can do is pay the correct amount.

You want to take over?  I will give you 20% of anything over 26K you get for my truck.

The haggling over add on bullshit is the major haggling!  Of course you have to just go all Nancy Reagan on their ass and just say no!

Yeah, I've bought a few there, but in reality, their prices suck.  Last vehicle I bought, I internet shopped, found what I wanted at the price I wanted.  Didn't like what they offered for trade in.  Within a month, they dropped the price more than the difference we were off and I went and got it.  If you're patient, and ready to move quickly on one when you find it, plenty of good deals out there.

I hate this has happened to you. If you switch to us now, we will backdate the paperwork for you so you were covered with us during your accident. Complete replacement truck, loaner car, cute 2nd car such as a vintage cabriolet for Martha, and some casino money. We'll throw in 2 days at the doggy spa for Rascal, Romeo, and Remi. We cannot insure Toby at this time.

Hail damage? You mean from saying Hail Mary’s while watching that truck run their stop sign and plow into you? Because I swear there was no damage, prior.

Hey big spender! Talk is cheap. If you really want to help around here, make the same offer of back-dated insurance coverage to the driver of the at-fault car and we can call this a day!

No. We were only doing this as a courtesy to Martha. Offer has been rescinded and we are reporting you to the Dallas chapter of the Bureau for Insurance Fraud.

God bless,

Fraud? Mr. Jay Shar himself admitted that we made him a fair offer, and that his truck had preexisting damage that we did not ding him for. It is only you who offered retro-active insurance coverage. You reinstate your offer to Jay and Martha, or forever be known as a welsher.

A couple I know has a Terrain and they love it. It's too small for me, so I like the Acadia. Although the Acadia shrunk from the previous generation. I like my Trailblazer so I'm keepin' it. Good luck w/ the shopping, I know car buying is such a PITA. Have you tried this site? http://www.factorypreownedcollection.com/

HA! No way.  But I will state, that in my few accidents where I wasn't at fault  my insurance company (USAA) said "Do you want us to 'cover' this and we go after getting the money, OR do you want to work with their insurance company directly?"  In the first situation, I would get the full USAA treatment BUT pay my deductible ($250) which I would get back when/if they got the other insurance company or driver to pay them.

If the deal was fair from the other folks, I would go with them, but if it was a BS offer, I would go with USAA.

I did it both ways with two not at fault accidents.  Both went fine but when my insurance company processed the claim I had to wait about 30 days to recover my deductible which would have been nice to have before I had to buy the replacement car.

The second one was through their insurance and my car wasn't totaled but I felt the claim was handled fairly but I had to deal with the insurance company on all negotiations.

Either way it's a PITA

When I have a guy I have known for 10 years, who does insurance adjusting tell me that the deal is good, and I MIGHT be able to get another $500 to $1000 max, then I am okay.  I am giving it my last shot today with a few items they left off my truck a few very recent comp vehicles and the fact that I am going to the chiropractor this week due to back pain that is lingering.  See what they say.   And I still have the option of paying my $500 deductible and turning this over to my insurance,

Sometimes in the Cafe, you have to choose "serious" or "joking" mode.  From my "serious" side, I will just say you should not settle for getting A GRAND or more (or even less) for an accident you didn't cause. If your replacement cost is $27k, you should not have to settle for $26k. Of course, maybe your insurance company is not great either, so you are screwed either way? But the $500 deductible should be a moot point if the other person was at fault.

I found it a little frustrating when I posted of my accidents and the well meaning comments of what I have to do or don't do.  Some was in jest, some was helpful and some wasn't.  The truth of the matter is we really don't know the whole situation and we pass on info that we feel may be helpful that sometimes is and sometimes isn't

I looked it as since I posted it here I really can't get upset with anyone's response as I brought it on myself.  But you have to take it all with a grain of salt and do what you feel is best for you.

I feel for ya man, it's a PITA...

State Farm says I have to pay it.  My truck had a few dings that I would have to fix.  $500 deductible for hail damage.  $500 for the scrape on the side where I got to close to a post backing up.  That is a grand right there.

Just spoke to my agent for a few mintues.  Even he feels that it is a gamble to get State Farm involved and I trust him.  Says it may come out better, the same or worse.

His advice was pretty much what I have done.  He said another $1000 was the most I could hope to get out of Geico and that I may have to ask to speak to a supervisor to get to there.

You've got a handle on this.  I'm sorry it might end up costing you time and money, but in the big picture, you and your kid didn't get seriously injured or killed. That's the bigger blessing wrapped in the PITA that is insurance claims.

So for the ride that you pictured above.....

My wife has had two.  That is what their office uses as company cars.  I really don't like hers.  The front passenger seat (I can't drive it due to insurance) sits way too high and I can't find a way to adjust it.  It makes it difficult for me to get in and out due to past neck issues and inflexibility (of my neck, not my morals).  Once you are in the seat it is pretty comfy and roomy.  Hers is a base model, YMMV.  The ride is not especially smooth, but it probably needs new taars (YMMV).  To say that the motor is anemic would be nice.  I say it has zero balls.  But this is also my wife driving and again, base model (YMMV).

Her car has 60K ish miles on it and has been very reliable and dependable.  It's not a horrible looking car and there seems to be plenty of room in it for a small SUV.  It's not 4X4 but seems to do good in the snow for the most part.  I would not buy it for me strictly because of how underpowered it is, but the model you are looking at may have an upgraded motor?  But then again we have my truck to pull heavy stuff with.   Having said all of this, we may purchase this car from her company when it hits about 90k miles and give it to Griffin. I think it would make a fine first car for a first-time driver.

My .02 cents worth is that now that I have had my truck I could NOT go back to an SUV.  If I could not afford this truck I think that I would rather have an older one to keep and then also buy a little crappy Honda civic to drive around.  Or a motorcycle and an older truck.  But you do what you gotta do bro.

How much longer they going to give you the rental vehicle? When the Ranger sacrificed its life, Allstate said as soon as they made the offer, the rental vehicle had to go back.

I turned it yesterday but we have a car that I can drive, so I am in no hurry.  I think Geico realized this.  I told him he missed a few things on my truck so he went back out and re examined it, agreed with me that he had missed them and raised the value to clean retail.  I really cannot ask, or at least expect much more.  Even my friend that does this for a living told me that $750 or so was about all that I could expect to get added.

So now just waiting to hear from my insurance co on the hail loss claim.  If I get another $500 there I come out ahead of the game.

$27,500 for a truck that I paid around 30k for and drove for 3 years.
