Popular Post dinneR ★ Posted June 23, 2018 Popular Post Share #1 Posted June 23, 2018 My friend Ben is doing the Tour Divide. Since it is the 20th anniversary of the route he is giving free concerts along the route. I saw that he would be around here on my day off so I decided to chase him down and attend a concert. I thought I could catch him and ride together. He blew through my world long before I started. He said they rode 320 miles in two days to get to Pinedale early. I started my ride Thursday after work. 40 miles to Moran and camped for the night. Mosquitoes were ferocious here. I killed a beer and sandwich and crawled into my tent early. My plan was to leave by 6:00 am, giving me 12 hours to cover 120 miles and make it to his concert. I did not know the route, how difficult it would be, or how much snow I might encounter. I got a late start, but rolled out at 6:30. Right out of the gate I climbed for 17.5 miles to the continental divide and Togwotee pass. The descent was cold, temp in the 30s. Then I headed up Union Pass. Another long climb, but much steeper than the last. At the top, snow covered the path. I took the muddy work around. Over the divide again. This descent was beautiful. It went on forever. Bumpy, rocky road, but so much fun. I was running way behind schedule. As I left the National Forest, I caught a tailwind that carried me into Pinedale an hour early. The look on Ben's face was hilarious when he saw me. Kind of wtf are you doing here man? He put on a great show, told some stories, sang some songs. We went out for burgers and beer afterward. The camping scene wasn't great here so I booked a room at a local motel. Turns out, Ben was my neighbor. The next morning, Ben and Keenan(camera guy, making a movie about the trip) left at 7:30. I rolled out at 8:30 and headed home. 2.5 days of riding, 235 miles, 10,000 ft of climbing. 9

Longjohn ★ Posted June 23, 2018 Share #4 Posted June 23, 2018 I don't like cold, I really don't like cold in June. I prefer the Eastern Continental Divide, It doesn't have snow in June. Congratulations on a great weekend ride.

I skipped a race today to do my bikepacking trip. 154 miles ride around the rock. Last year I think I took 13 hours to finish riding alone because I showed up late. A friend of mine won it this year. So far, only three people have finished. Rain, hail, snow, and 30F temps at the top of the pass. It looks like I made the ride choice.
