Thermal cycling? Nobody goes thermal cycling in the summer, it’s close to 100 degrees.

exactly.  Connects to the cooling thingamajig and the big metal piece.  There's a widget in there, but that's not broke so I should fix it.

If your water pump failed in Fishtown, the first thing I would suspect was scale build up due to hard water.

But it's a WATER doohickey.   If I were going to fill it in Fishtown I would have needed to install a wudder doohickey.

BTW, it's the thermostat housing, plastic.  Lovely plastic.  Brittle plastic.

But I've never seen one fail so spectacularly.  I just hope the missing piece is on the street somewhere.  Bizarre, though, that it waited until I shut off the engine to explode.  The afterrun pump should be lower pressure
