When I had mine removed I was in the hospital for a week and some of that was in Intensive care. Having it removed just forced me to eat better. Fried food don't agree with me anymore. Surgery was nothing compared to the prior pain. I've also had no diet restrictions. Problem here is if a stone is caught in a passage, they may have to cover you up and life flight you the 150 miles to Billings to complete the surgery. That can get very expensive.
