12string Posted July 20, 2018 Share #2 Posted July 20, 2018 On my bucket list. I could never do one of those huge ship cruises, but the windjammer cruise would be incredible. I see it's actually cheaper than I thought it would be. A friend's son and daughter in law sail for one of those companies, waiting to get an invite for a discounted cruise

For whatever reason, my wife has grown more and more susceptible to nausea, so a week or two of dramamine or similar seems awful She has even gotten nauseous sea kayaking in the Caribbean, and she takes the dramamine if we are whale watching or some other shorter duration ocean boating trip. On a large cruise ship, it has happened in heavy seas, but not in mild or calm seas. We've done the wrist pressure things (hard to determine their efficacy), but maybe the ear patch things are the best route for her now. Sailboats are generally better, causing less motion sickness than power boats. And a larger boat like this would be less prone to inducing motion sickness than a small sea kayak bobbing in the water or a whale watching boat.

I did a bit of googling to see if they had gyros, like seakeepers on the Island Windjammer and they did not say they did on their site, or on any reviews I found. Did find one sailing cruise in the Med that had gyros.
Tizeye Posted July 20, 2018 Share #7 Posted July 20, 2018 I have a friend who captains sail charters through the Caribbean. While I dislike the mega cruise ships - particurally Carnival’s itinerary at least one “fun day at sea” (translation- captive on ship with day sailing to reward their casino, bars, etc). One I might consider would be an Alaskan cruise but might default to train. On small boats, looking at Viking river cruise.

I had a gyro salad yesterday and did not get seasick, so you may be onto something. 2

Popular Post Digital_photog ★ Posted July 20, 2018 Popular Post Share #14 Posted July 20, 2018 This is probably the closest I came to that. I built a Bolger Black Skimmer 25 sharpie in the 1970s and sailed it in the Everglades. This isn't mine but the same color and same color sails. Looks like a twin to mine. Plywood with epoxy and fiberglass cover. Stitch and glue construction. One of the biggest mistakes I made was selling it and buying a Catalina 22 that I still own. This site talks about building one of them. http://www.nexusmarine.com/skimmer_home.html

I do like the huge ship cruises for the big stage shows, various music rooms, and other entertainment available between ports.

When it finally ended the "cruise" was it's funeral barge according to the author. It's appalling that you would consider yourself well read without knowing about this slice of Americana. maddmaxx ★ Posted July 21, 2018 Share #23 Posted July 21, 2018 If you want to do it relatively inexpensively check out America Cup Charters in Newport RI. They do 2 hour cruises and you are welcome to pitch in and help sail the vessel. I believe you can also still sail the J boats in Newport.

Further Posted July 21, 2018 Author Share #25 Posted July 21, 2018 You do realize that when I say 'engaged' I mean flop from one side of the boat to the other. I make good ballast.
