Popular Post Gump Posted July 24, 2018 Popular Post Share #1 Posted July 24, 2018 Finished our 8- day Cape Bretton tour yesterday with 60 really windy miles. 366 miles total and lots of hills. Saturday was the most challenging day I have ever done riding. North Mt. was 4.5k @ 12-16%. On the decent, which was even steeper, I overheated the rear break and flatted at 30 mph on a very steep section. Was able to unclog and get a foot down and then locked the rear brake before the tire came off the rim. Slid about 50-60 feet to a stop. Killed the tire but not a scratch on me. McKenzie Mt. was around 4K @ 12-14% but pretty steady so just a long grind. Pic is from the decent down French Mt. spectacular scenery.
shootingstar Posted July 24, 2018 Share #2 Posted July 24, 2018 Good for the brakes, etc. It does look spectacular..when one remembers to stop.

maddmaxx ★ Posted July 25, 2018 Share #6 Posted July 25, 2018 That's why I went to discs. When I first came back from the Florida after a year of living in a hotel I weighed 245 lbs and the first time I dismounted a tire to find the bead partially melted to the rim I decided that hill country was not for rim brakes. That was one of the first lessons of my return to biking.

This was probably a 2 mile decent with some real steep pitches. I was trying to go light on the brakes but apparently it takes a lot of brake to hold back 210 lbs?
