Apparently, We Need To Relearn How To Drive

Even in an all-gas-engine car, I hate it when I can't "regenerate" the energy I needed to drive up a mountain road because the drivers in front of me go slow block me from going at least the speed limit on the downhill side.

I'm driving up and down the mountains on I-81 in NE Pennsylvania.  I reach the top of a hill and begin going downhill.  Two cars ahead of me is a car going 55 on a 65 mph road where almost everyone's going 75.  So I move into the fast lane to pass and the SOB in front of me cuts me off so he, too, can pass the slow guy.  He pulls alongside of the slow guy - who now decides to speed up to 60, and fails to pass him while holding his cell phone to his ear.  Meanwhile, with 1/2 mile of downhill in front of me, I can't pass so I have to step on my brake and hold it most of the way down.

Oh, we're a lot more screwed than that.

I firmly believe all driver's ed classes should fail people for the following:

  • failure to use turn signals when turning
  • failure to use turn signals when lane changing
  • failure to keep right, pass left (major issue in my state)
  • staying level with the car in the right lane, as opposed to passing and getting over, stalling the flow of traffic
  • not learning how to let off the gas as opposed to using the brake in a panicky fashion in situations where it hurts the flow of traffic
  • failure to yield right of way
  • failure to understand traffic circles (it's not that hard people)

Failure to use the gas pedal thus merging on a highway at half the highway speed...........and worse, causing the car behind to enter the highway at the same speed.

There are lots of car pointers out there and very few drivers.  If you ask them however, they are great drivers.

IMO drivers should go through a school more like a modified version of one of the race schools where they teach avoidance and car control on slick roads.  There's very little that can teach most of them to give driving the attention it deserves however.  After all, they are great drivers.

Around here, I'd settle for:

  • failure to stop at red lights and stop signs
  • failure to stay out of the $@#%^$% shoulder!
  • left and U turns wherever the hell you feel like making them
  • cellphones, texting, instagram.......
  • windows tinted darker than the paint on the car
  • tailgating - actually so close now it's become backseatgating

I have witnessed a lot of dumb drivers in other states, but Texas is holding the record so far!

We are not the very worst, but we are WAY down there, or up there.  Not sure.
