ChrisL Posted November 7, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2018 You guys ever eat them? Every fall I binge on them as the season is short and they are oh so good. They have them at my LGS for $.99 each but I go to the local Asian market and get them for $.99 a lb. I bought about 8 lbs worth Sunday and they are almost gone (I did give several away). They are similar to an apple (you got to peel them tho) and delightfully sweet & crunchy. Give them a try if you can find them.
shootingstar Posted November 7, 2018 Share #2 Posted November 7, 2018 Quote I eat the Hayicha version...I didn't check the dictionary. I like them soft and plump. My partner says persimmons dries his mouth/throat that he feels like he's suffocating...?

Right, the ones shaped more like a teardrop are softer and I don't care for the texture of those.
sheep_herder ★ Posted November 7, 2018 Share #4 Posted November 7, 2018 They grew wild where I grew up, and we picked and ate them sometimes. Possums also loved them.

donkpow Posted November 7, 2018 Share #7 Posted November 7, 2018 They make a real mess when ripe. There is one down by the college I ride by and the fruit was all over the sidewalk and street.
Parr8hed Posted November 7, 2018 Share #8 Posted November 7, 2018 The wild horses on the beach in North Carolina love them. Lots of locals have planted trees there to draw them in.
Tizeye Posted November 7, 2018 Share #9 Posted November 7, 2018 Never acquired the taste. As a child we had a tree. Dad would eat then in a bowl with evaporated milk. Bleh!
Page Turner Posted November 7, 2018 Share #10 Posted November 7, 2018 ...the larger ones are great for baking stuff like persimmon bread and persimmon cookies. The smaller, crisper ones are also called "apple" persimmons locally. There are a few trees of the bigger ones in my neighborhood, but the crows get most of those, so I buy mine at the farmers market. Kiwis are also coming into season here soon. Ralphie ★ Posted November 8, 2018 Share #11 Posted November 8, 2018 I've never noticed seeing a persimmon tree. I used to love my persimmon golf woods though. :) And it is a lot of work to harvest those little seeds that I can never remember the name of anvils or something like that. :D Arils! Areolas?
