Tell me something cheerful

Got some Viagra today, had a terrific meal in a restaurant, an order of Harney tea showed up in the mail, and at this moment I am sipping some very good hot cocoa.

Tell ya a story. The wife and I flew into Vegas about 20 years ago. It's 2AM when we get to our room, but we decide to get frisky. I was a backpacker back then, and had legs like tree trunks. It was a 4 poster, and the bed breaks, snap, snap, snap, thump. The frame wound up flat on the floor, so I said lets worry about in the morning, and we went back to doing what we were doing.

I was driving to Home Depot today when one of the two cars ahead of was getting a little anxious. The first car was driving the speed limit when car number two decided to pass car number one in a no passing zone. The car behind me was a cop.

The reds went on and I was laughing all the way to Home Depot.

True story this happened about two hours ago.

My wife has two friends visiting from Ohio, the New Jersey of the Midwest. I made them pancakes for breakfast and went to work at the LBS. It was cold and windy today so business was slow. Boss asked who wants to go home early? My friend was scheduled for late shift, the other guy needs the hours more than me, so I left three hours early. Drinking Woodford Reserve and waiting on the ladies for dinner. We're taking them to the Vienna Inn when they're ready.

Ohio is the jewel of the midwest, but everything else sounded ok.  Now I want a chili dog and a cold Vienna Lager.

I was just carrying my tower speakers down to the basement and banged my knuckle into the wall with about 40 pounds of momentum behind it. It hurts BAD! That should cheer you up.

?

Improved my day for sure; thanks for sharing!

If you were here, I'd buy you one of each with a side of wings.

I had a long boring conference call one night this week, and my cat was sleeping next to the phone.  Every time I was getting frustrated or annoyed, I just looked at the phone and saw my old kitty sleeping peacefully and making cute snoring sounds utterly indifferent to the boring call - and it made me feel happy.

My teenage nephew Ryan, who had tremendous emotional and academic troubles after his infant son, Tucker, died last winter - as many here remember and kindly prayed for, is now a Senior in high school and has A's in all his classes.  He and his mother recently toured West Virginia University.  His mother, my sister, is a cancer research nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital but the researchers there are technically employed by Johns Hopkins University which gives employees' children full college scholarships to Hopkins or will pay half, about $25,000/year, if they attend a different college.  My sister has enough years-in that the scholarship will stay in force even if my sister retires.  Ryan's Junior Year problems will probably keep him from getting accepted to Hopkins but he'll get into a state college somewhere.

As the only member of my local, extended family to actually live on campus when I had a scholarship/teaching assistantship to grad. school at IIT in the '70's, I've been advising Ryan and trying to provide the atmosphere where Ryan develops more of the qualities that make college students successful: more time studying, knowing to limit video game playing time and other entertainment, being responsible not only for homework, but doing more than the minimum required, etc.  I've also talked to him about showing up for EVERY college class - even if there are RARE times he didn't get his homework done - and making sure he's not partying in college during the week and not being intoxicated in class and when studying.  I told him that if I send him beer money, its for weekends only - and I'll need to see some successful college grades before doing so.  He seems to be developing greater maturity and learning from his Junior year's bad experiences that he'll have to make the best of his opportunities.  Of course, no one can "motivate" someone else: motivation MUST come from within.  The best I can do is provide the atmosphere where he's more likely to motivate himself.  Things seem to be moving in the right direction.

Fortunately, he's got a good family and lots of friends, is smart, talented and athletic and has had enough good experiences that he seems to have regained his confidence and drive:

He's certainly more accomplished academically, artistically, and athletically than most kids and hopefully it will help him stay focused and successful in the future.

Meanwhile Adam, my other nephew, scored in the top 1%, 1%, 1%, and 2% last year in Maryland's four 4th grade functional tests, doing best in math where he was in the top 0.1%.  He's tall for his age, is one of the leading scorers on his basketball team and played on the elite traveling youth-league baseball team, though he dropped that this past winter because the team practices all year - right through the winter - and he had too many other irons in the fire.
