Road Runner Posted December 12, 2018 Share #3 Posted December 12, 2018 Be sure to rest for two or three minutes before you take it. Sometimes BP will jump up when you get up and move around.
Kzoo Posted December 12, 2018 Share #4 Posted December 12, 2018 I had a Dr explain to me that all of us typically have high BP at some time during the course of our day and one reading is not an issue unless it is very high. His explanation was that the pattern was more important.
donkpow Posted December 13, 2018 Share #5 Posted December 13, 2018 I am dealing with bp problems. I am increasing medication levels today as I was not controlled under 140/80 consistently. My PCP makes it a practice to treat people over 140/80 and that is the target I have been assigned. I really hate this and don't understand the cause. Just three years ago I had bp that a 20 yo would be comfortable with. In fact, given my age, I was worried I might have bp too low. Now it's a daily chore. I say go ahead and get a measuring tool. I've had two different ones over the last ten or so years. One electronic and one manual. The electric quit working and the valve on the manual leaks. They are just cheap ones from Walgreens. petitepedal ★ Posted December 13, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted December 13, 2018 Yup..@donkpow ....trying to come to terms with it..and it is probably hereditary to some extent...but dang yeah...I had good BP up until 1.5 years ago I feel like I have failed...I know I am not 100% perfect with my diet and exercise..but dang it...I am at least 80%.... donkpow Posted December 13, 2018 Share #8 Posted December 13, 2018 Yes, exactly so. I am finding that age is exposing weaknesses I was not aware of. On the bp front, I've been trying to do some reading on the topic. Blood pressure regulation in the body is very complex. Multiple systems are involved. So even if you do everything recommended for fitness and do things that are intended to protect you from high blood pressure, you still have endocrine and neurological systems that influence pressure regulation. Those things aren't necessarily influenced by healthy living. It is reasonable to conclude that medication may be necessary to simply block the results of anything that can influence your heart to increase pressure beyond healthy levels.

Just the way I am. If I know it's being checked I need to force myself to relax which is difficult. Years ago a nurse checked it and was like ? donkpow Posted December 13, 2018 Share #20 Posted December 13, 2018 I knew a guy who had hypotension, abnormally low blood pressure. He told me that it was not uncommon for the attendants who took his pressure to freak out when they got the readings and try to rush him to the ER. No note on the door or anything. I had to call them and ask where the heck they went, then they said I was late and would have to reschedule. I rescheduled all right, at a different dentist. 1

As usual it took longer to drive there and home than the appointment, but, that is a good thing.
late Posted December 14, 2018 Share #25 Posted December 14, 2018 I had blood pressure that high, about 20 years ago. Time to get one of the device you can use at home. Then check your BP first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed. Then, look into lowering your BP. Get some more potassium in your diet, see if that helps. Coconut water is one way to do that. You need to be careful about it, make sure your BP med doesn't react badly with potassium. You will want to do something about the stress. Maybe yoga before or after work. Might be a spin class, I used to do those in the winter. Just don't go to one where they have you pedal backwards. There are some genuinely awful classes out there. Celery is good for your BP. I try to use a lot of it these days. A half dozen stalks is a good number in a dish, I like to put them in first, with the onions, to soften them up. They'll shrink after you cook them for a while. Good luck, you can beat this. 2
