sheep_herder ★ Posted December 13, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted December 13, 2018 All you want to know about Katahdin sheep. They are very hardy and the lambs are vigorous, even in temperatures near 0F. The flock we purchased ours from, were originally from the flock used in the Heifer Project International Program. You do not shear these sheep. They grow a dense undercoat for winter that is shed in the spring (Good bird nest material or liner). We often start lambing in late December, so this is a bit early. However, we run our rams with the ewes year around, so in a year like this that was cool and wet, the sheep begin breeding a bit earlier than normal. When the nights start cooling off, as they did even in August, the sheep become active. The early and late ones are outliers, and the bulk of the lambs will come in the next few months. We run the rams with the ewes, as we do not have a good place to keep them separated. Kirby, no one is complaining about these wonderful temperatures we are experiencing in December. However, it is nice when they remain around freezing, so that we do not have to deal with mud.
