Thankfully that bike doesn’t have a top tube for me to damage certain body parts on. Just scared me.

Prophet Zacharia Posted January 19, 2019 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2019 I once snapped the through bolt on my crank while on a group ride. I was turning left through an intersection when all of a sudden my pedal and crank arm were separated from my bike, but still connected to my shoe. That was an odd sensation. 1
sheep_herder ★ Posted January 19, 2019 Share #6 Posted January 19, 2019 I once had a pedal break off near the end of a 400 mile ride in North Dakota. It was a bit challenging to ride the remaining 5+miles with one leg. Luckily we had done a bit of one leg pedaling in spin class. I think that helped. 2

donkpow Posted January 19, 2019 Share #14 Posted January 19, 2019 If you disassemble pedals for fun or maintenance, you will have a new perspective on their apparent durability. The shaft is very small diameter and the metal is strong but brittle. If you hit a naked spindle just right with a hammer, it may break quite easily.

Dirtyhip Posted January 19, 2019 Share #16 Posted January 19, 2019 Parrot, MTBers are used to losing a pedal. We usually don't bust the entire thing off tho.
donkpow Posted January 19, 2019 Share #17 Posted January 19, 2019 I saw a guy lose it in a criterium in the sprint to finish. I don't know if the chain or pedal broke. The rider went down and stayed there. The pedal finished third. ? 1 3 1
Dirtyhip Posted January 19, 2019 Share #18 Posted January 19, 2019 My husband busted a Deity pedal on a MTB ride. The pedal had an internal shaft that he could stand on, but it would slide off if he moved his foot. it would come off at most of our stops, On one of the stops I ran over his pedal. Hilarity ensued. He had a hard time getting down the hill with the failed part.

donkpow Posted January 19, 2019 Share #20 Posted January 19, 2019 You can see in the picture by the oxidized area that the spindle has been broken or cracked for a while. 1

Same result though as I had to pedal one-legged for about 7 miles. Fortunately is was very flat.
