Razors Edge ★ Posted February 8, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2019 Anybody completed theirs yet? Any news to report? Any tips or lessons learned? I usually wait until April 14th (I like to get it in a day early!), but this year has me a little worried.
Kzoo Posted February 8, 2019 Share #2 Posted February 8, 2019 I have not but I have heard that with the tax changes the 1040 has changed a bunch. With the new personal deduction amounts, many will not want to itemize anymore.
bikeman564™ Posted February 8, 2019 Share #3 Posted February 8, 2019 My taxes are easy because I don't meet the standard deduction and can't itemize. I did a dry run last weekend and I'm getting back slightly less than last year, so it seems correct.
dinneR ★ Posted February 8, 2019 Share #4 Posted February 8, 2019 I owed $9 this year. I did not get a tax cut. I paid a little more in 2018 than in 2017.
ChrisL Posted February 8, 2019 Share #5 Posted February 8, 2019 I just got my final W2 but my wife has been crunching numbers for a while. She dials in our witholdings so we generally come out even or having to pay a little. She would rather have the $$ during the year than get a big return. Last year was the closest she got, I think we paid like $9. We had to pay a couple of hundred to Fed but got pretty close to the same amount back in state. maddmaxx ★ Posted February 8, 2019 Share #6 Posted February 8, 2019 Not all that different on Turbo Tax except maybe a bit more information required. Return is a bit smaller but withholding was also smaller during the year. I don't think I saw much of the benefit for the little guy from this last years tax laws. JerrySTL ★ Posted February 8, 2019 Share #11 Posted February 8, 2019 I have to wait a little longer before I dare do my taxes. I worked for 3 different companies in 2018. I moved money from two 401k's into a third. And just recently I added $6,500 into an IRA for 2018 and the check hasn't cleared for that. I'll probably wait until mid-March this year. I did do taxes for a friend of the wife. She owes Illinois $1. I tried my best but I couldn't find a way to get it to zero, or better yet, have Illinois owe her some.
maddmaxx ★ Posted February 8, 2019 Share #12 Posted February 8, 2019 Done and filed. It's great to be a pauper.
12string Posted February 8, 2019 Share #13 Posted February 8, 2019 Haven't even looked yet. I always owe a couple thousand. Except last year. I paid a bunch of 2018 charitable donations and property tax in December 2017, got a bunch back. This year, I'll take the standard deduction. would have done that anyway since my itemizations would have been less than the new deduction. I also don't think I sold any stock, so just salary, 1099 and dividend income, no itemizing, should be easy this year.
Prophet Zacharia Posted February 8, 2019 Share #14 Posted February 8, 2019 But... but... we were promised a tax cut for the next couple of years! What happens when these expire and our taxes go up?!?
